Bella walked through the lobby, scanning for Jasper and Alice. She spotted them outside under the porte cacher, loading the Mercedes, deep in a heated discussion. Then she heard someone laughing and turned to see Destinee. An idea suddenly came to her mind. She always wanted to get rid of that girl and now she had the opportunity. And just then the chance to get her away from the others was laying in front of her perfectly. Anni and Yana left and Destinee was standing there alone. The three didn't know that they were being watched just seconds ago. She grabbed Destinee.
"Hey Destinee."
The young teenager was surprised to hear Bella and to see her when she turned around.
"Bella, What are you doing here?"
"I came here to Phoenix because one of my old Ballett teachers called. They heard of you and asked of me to tell you that they want to meet you."
"Really?" Destinee asked, eyeing Bella suspiciously.
"Yes", Bella nodded.
"O... kaaay."
"We can get a taxi and go there. It's not that far."
"Well I have nothing to do right now, so I guess it's okay."
Bella pulled her to the doors and slipped out with her, rushed toward a Taxi and jumped in, closing the door behind Destinee. The driver was an elderly woman with a hacking cough. Bella took a breath.
"8th and Palo Verde, please."
The taxi pulled out. Bella unnoticeable to Destinee watched the hotel disappear.
'I've never given much thought to how I would die... but dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go.'
They arrived at a building with 'MIMI'S SCHOOL OF DANCE' at the wall.
Bella climbed out of the taxi and Destinee followed. The taxi pulled away, leaving them on the curb facing the deserted building. Bella twirled her mother's ring around her finger, then reached for the pepper spray.
'I can't bring myself to regret the decisions that brought me face to face with death... they also brought me to Edward.'
She slipped the pepper spray into her jeans pocket. She wrapped her purse strap around her wrist. She takes a breath, approached the school. Carefully peering in the windows. The blinds were drawn. But from inside, she could hear a faint sound.
"Bella? Bella?"
It was time. Time for her plan. Bella went to the front door. It was unlocked. She turned around to Destinee.
"Wait here, I'm going to inform them that you're here. Then I will call you."
Destinee sighed.
"Fine", she gave in.
That all looked weird to her. But she shook it off. Even if her instincts were telling her the opposite. Bella cautiously entered the grand, empty room of mirrors. A ballet bar was wrapped around the walls.
"Bella, where are you?"
Bella whirled, trying to find its source. She followed the sound to a cleaning supply closet. She threw open the door to find a T.V.. A video was playing. Bella, at the age of seven, hid in the very closet the T.V. was in now. Little Bella looked up.
"Don't you want to dance, baby?"
The little version of Bella shook her head stubbornly. The frame jiggled as Rene handed someone the camera. Rene, ten years younger, appeared on screen and kneeled next to Bella.
"Everyone makes fun of me."
"But you're a wonderful dancer."
"Mom, I suck."
Laughter came from behind Bella. She spun, trying to locate James in the mirrors.
"That's my favorite part. Stubborn child, weren't you?"
Bella's face flushed with rage and relief.
"She's not here", Bella noticed whispering.
"Sorry. But you really made it too easy."
Visible in the mirror, he sighed, disappointed. Then he stepped up next to her and pointed a video camera at Bella.
"So to make things more entertaining, I'm going to make a little film of our time together. Borrowed this from your house. Hope you don't mind."
James turned on the camera.
"And... action!"
Bella flung her purse at him, and ran for the door.
"Excellent! An escape attempt."
Suddenly, he was right behind her. She froze.
"It'll break Edward's little heart."
He smelled her hair and touched her throat.
"Edward has nothing to do with this."
"He will. His rage will make for more interesting sport than his feeble attempt to protect you.
He was having too much fun to notice the peppers spray in her hand. She spun around and sprayed him. Then she ran, as James reeled back briefly. But he leapt over her and landed right in front of her.
"Wait."
"Why should I?"
"I can make it more interesting. There is some 'food' for you outside. And if I call her inside, she's all yours."
"Two at a time? Hm, why not? But you will stay here. I will keep an eye on you."
Bella smirked, seeing finally the last step of completing her plan.
"Destinee!"
The doors opened and Destinee slowly came inside.
"Bella?"
"Remember,... I will keep an eye on you", James whispered before he hid behind a mirror.
"Bella?"
"I'm here! Come on!"
The doors to the room with the many mirrors opened and the young teen came in.
"Bella, why is it that dark here?"
"Late working."
"Oh, okay."
From his hideout, James could smell the alluring blood. In this one second where he smelled her scent, he forgot about Bella and only wanted Destinee. He waited for them to step into the middle of the room.
"Bella I don't know. Can't we go back to the hotel, please? It's creepy here."
"Come on, they're waiting for us."
When they stood there in the middle, James jumped forward. Bella saw him and pushed Destinee towards him.
"Bella What is wrong with you?" Destinee exclaimed.
But suddenly, she felt someone grip her shoulders. She yelped which turned into a high pitched scream.
"Now let's have fun, shall we?" James whispered into her ear.
"Bella?"
Destinee looked around frantically but didn't find her.
"That wench tricked me. She's going to pay!"
He flung Destinee across the floor like a bowling ball. She smashed hard into a mirrored column. Bella just sat there behind a pillar and watched the whole thing.
"I did what you told me to", Bella tried to defend herself.
Destinee couldn't believe her ears. James advanced back to her. He inhaled as if he can taste her already.
"Are you special to the ones I hate? I don't think so. I don't see a thing that makes you special. Except for the scent of you delicious blood.
"Too bad that this weak vampire of yours didn't have the strength to turn any of you. Instead he kept you this fragile little humans. It's cruel, really."
'Hey, he's mine!' Bella wanted to yell out. But she knew that it would make James drain her of her blood first. And she wanted to live longer. Even if it meant to sacrifice Destinee.
"Beautiful! Very visually dynamic. I chose my stage well."
James flipped on the camera, but the lens was coated with pepper spray. He tried to wipe it off.
"Well done! You've succeeded in annoying me", he grumbled getting angrier about Bella.
Then James stomped on Destinee's shin, making her tibia snap. He let out his anger at her. She screamed in agony.
"Tell Edward how much it hurts."
Abruptly, the camera was in her face.
"Tell him to avenge you."
'No! Edward, don't...'
James inhaled as her blood pooled. He leaned in hungrily. The half-conscious watched him turn the camera on his own face.
"Cut! The end."
Suddenly James was knocked out of frame. He rose to find himself face to face with Edward. James charged Edward, forcing him up against a column.
"You're alone... because you're faster than the others. But not stronger", James hissed.
He smashed Edward's face into the mirror until it cracked.
"I'm strong enough to kill you", Edward hissed back.
Edward flung James backwards smashing through a freestanding mirror into the doorway. He scooped Destinee up and leapt toward the balcony exit door when suddenly he and Destinee are jerked downward. James yanked Edward violently onto the floor the young girl out of his arms as James flung Edward up into the top window, embedding him in the casement and bricks. James crouched beside Destinee. He grabbed her hand, looking directly at Edward with a sinister grin and he sank his teeth into Destinee's hand. She screamed in agony. Edward's rage erupted. He climbed out of the window casement and suicide-dive-bombed James, savagely plowing him through the floorboards. The venom traveled through Destinee's veins.
