Chapter 5: When It All Began

A/N: It's like 3:00 in the mornig here, so sorry if the chapter blows. Also, all of this is in Bella's POV.

*FLASHBACK*

I hopped out of the escalade and slung my book bag over my shoulder. I turned around and waved to Katherine as she started up the car again.

"Chrissy'll pick you up at 3," she said before driving away.

I turned around and looked at the tall building in front of me. I sighed as I walked past the sign that read MALIBU MIDDLE SCHOOL.

As I walked towards the front gate, I couldn't help but chuckle at my best friend Jessie. She was leaning against the left pole, her book bag nearly falling off, and she had a toothpick in her mouth. She had on a gray hoodie, ripped jeans, and a backwards black snapback. Her signature first day of school look. It was Jessie's way of telling people she wasn't afraid and that she was tough.

When Jessie turned her head and saw me heading her way, she straightened up and her baby blue eyes widened in surprise. I laughed at her expression, since I could already tell why.

"What on earth are you wearing?" she asked, looking me up and down.

I sighed. I was wearing a white polo shirt with a blue and green striped sweater vest over it, a black knee length skirt, knee high socks, and my white converse. Overall, I looked like those stuck-up girly girl queen bees you see in movies. This is definetly NOT my style. You see, Jessie and I are actually supposed to be matching today, but not this year.

"One of my sisters swapped our outfit, which I had laid out last night, for this one", I responded, "Not sure exactly which one, but I have a feeling it's either Chrissy, Kath, or Dani."

"Yeah," Jessie agreed, "Doesn't seem like something Lauren's style."

"Amy doesn't seem to mind what I usualy wear on the first day."

"And Lisa would have had you wearing something that's between this," She gestured to my outfit, "and this" she said motioning to what she was wearing.

"Yep," I popped the "p".

"Well, even though we can't match, I'm sure we can still make a good first impression on everybody". With that, we hooked arms and walked inside.

After getting our schedules and locker numbers, we went our separate ways. I was roaming through the 500 hall, trying to find locker 532.

"Where in the world is it?" I muttered to myself.

I wasn't paying too much attention to where I was going and ended up bumping into somebody else. The next thing I knew, I was lying on my back on the tile floor. I groaned and sat up to look at the person I'd just bumped into. It was a girl with light brown hair and very, and I mean VERY, pale skin(it's almost as if she's never stepped outside into the sunlight before).

"You clutz! Watch where you're going!" the girl yelled at me. Her voice was high pitched and squeaky. A queen bee. Great. Just what I needed to begin my 6th grade year. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.

"Oh no! She did not just roll her eyes at you Ashley!" another voice said. Oh joy! This girl's got a possè with her too!

The girl named Ashley grabbed me by the collar and lifted me to my feet. Man, she may sound weak, but she is strong. I suddenly was filled with fear. She pulled me in real close and our faces were only a few centimeters apart. I could literally see the flames in her eyes.

"Listen you," she hissed, "I may not know you're name yet and I may only be in the 6th grade, but believe me when I tell you that I run this school. And if you ever interfere with me again, I will make you're life MISERABLE! Got it?!"

I nodded, suddenly even more scared for my life. Ashley shoved me towards the wall as she and her little crew started walking down the hall, as if nothing happened.

The rest of the day, I'd hoped and prayed that I wouldn't have to deal with Ashley agsin. But as luck would have it, Ashley was in EVERY SINGLE CLASS I HAD!! And the worst part is, we have RANKINGS in those classes. Apparently, they give awards to students who do the best in school. In all my classes, on the first day, I'd already been ranked as number 1. You'd think that's a good thing, but it's not. Guess who's number 2. Right beneath me. Ashley. I looked over to her everytime the teachers placed our names on the rankings board. I could already tell I was in a bad situation with her.

After school, I quickly grabbed my stuff from my locker and met Jessie at the main door. We were luckily hanging out at my house, and Chrissy was picking us up, so it wouldn't be long.

I didn't even give Jessie a chamce to greet me before I grabbed her arm and started speed walking.

"Geez girl," she said, "Why you in such a rush?"

"Just hurry," I responded nervously, "I'll explain at the house."

We finally got to the parking lot. There was Chrissy, waiting in the mini van and texting away on her phone or something lile that. I was filled with relief and ran over, Jessie following behind me. I opened the trunk and we threw our bags inside. I guess Christina didn't expect us to be so early, since she jumped in surprise when she heard us close the trunk. We climbed inside and buckled up.
"Oh hey girls!" Christina greetedas she started up the engine,"How was the first day?"

"Good," we both responded, "as ususal."
We looked at each other and laughed. Chrissy chuckled and shook her head, "You two are like Dani and Lauren sometimes."

As we pulled away from the parking lot, I saw Ashley and her crew glaring at me. I silently gulped and turned to face the front. I hoped and prayed it would all end soon.

-Skip car ride-

We finally arrived home. Jessie and I jumped out of the car. Once I unlocked the front door, I quickly yelled a hello to my mom and bolted upstairs to my room, dragging Jessie behind me. Luckily, Dani, Lauren, and Lisa weren't in there. We threw our bags on my bed, then shut and locked the door. I flopped on top of our bags and Jessie sat down on the floor.

"Wanna explain to me why you were in such a rush earlier?" she asked.

I took a deep breath before explaining evertthing that had happened that day. Jessie just sat there and listened intently.

"And that's why I wanted to leave so quickly," I finished. We sat in silence for a few moments.

"Wow," was all Jessie said. I nodded in agreement.

"What should I do?"

She sighed, "What is there you can do? Besides, it's only the first day. I'm sure it will all go away."

I prayed silently for like the 3rd time that day, hoping Jessie was right. We hung out the rest of the day before Jessie had to leave. That night, after dinner, everyone else was asleep, but I lay awake on my top bunk. I was so worried about the next day at school.

I was just succumbing to the powers of sleep when my phone lit up. I looked at it and saw I got a new text from and unknown number.

I was able to get your phone number. Don't question how. Tomorrow though, you're life becomes a living hell.
~Ash

I got really scared after that. I don't know how or who, but somehow Ashley git my number, and the message was threat enough. As I slowly fell asleep from worrying, I hoped that Ashley would put everything behind her the next day. Then, I was whisked into a nightmare.
