Just as I was about to turn the page of my book, Love Her Wild, I felt a vibration come from my phone.
Finn: come over I'm bored.
Finn Wolfhard. My childhood best friend and next door neighbour.
I rolled my eyes, knowing that all we'd do was listen to music and watch tv.
Ella: fine
I didn't really have anything to do, and my parents were away on business so it got quite lonely around here.
Finn: bring a jacket
Ella: okay?
I sighed, slipped on some converse and grabbed my bomber jacket hanging over my desk chair. Looking at myself in the mirror, I nodded with approval.Right as I was about to knock, the door swung open to a surprisingly uptight Finn.
"Hey."
I walked by him and into the kitchen,
mainly because we're at each other's houses all the time it's like I live here. They even have some food in the fridge with my name on it.
Speaking of that, I went to grab my water I left here yesterday.
"Hey Ella, did you want to go for ice cream?"
He was twiddling his thumbs, and rocking on his feet. Weird.
Taking a swig from the water, I replied,
"Uh, sure. Just let me go get some money."
I headed for the door but before I could step out, Finn spoke up.
"Nah, I got it."
I smiled and gave him a fist bump, watching him slip on some Vans.
He gave me mock finger guns and we were out the door. After a quiet walk down the main road, we made it to the ice cream shop. We'd been here so many times, the owner knows us by name.
"Ella! Finn! Welcome back! I assume you'll have the usual?" Emilio, the happy man behind the counter beamed at Finn & I.
Finn walked up to the counter, gave Emilio the usual amount.
"You know it! Thanks Emilio!"
Finn walked back, and sat down across from me in the small booth.
He had been acting a bit weird today, so I decided that he'd need something to take his mind off of whatever's been bothering him.
"Did you want to sleepover tonight? My parents are out of town and it's usually pretty boring."
A bright smile spread across his face.
The smile I know and love.
"Yeah. I'd like that."
Before we could continue any more of our conversation, Emilio came and dropped off our order.
Finn got a Vanilla soft serve, with a blue cone because 'it adds flavour'. I got a cup of Mint Chocolate Chip, in a waffle bowl. We also got a box of macaroons to share, in a variety of colours & flavours.
"Thank you so much!"
Emilio smiled,
"Enjoy, Kiddos!"
When he walked away, Finn smirked and I did too. In unison we both shouted,
"I CALL THE BLUE MACAROON!"Walking back, conversation was much more avid. We'd been talking about what we were going to do tonight, school coming up, drama, everything. We were talking as best friends. Arriving at his doorstep, I grabbed the key from under the planter and unlocked it, walking in after.
"Damn, Ella. You practically live here!"
I let out a scoff followed by a small grin.
"Alright Finnlard go get your stuff."
He ran upstairs to his bedroom, while I waited around in the kitchen.
Just sitting on the island, something caught my eye. Messily printed on a small lined piece of paper, was a note from Finn's brother, Nick.
Looking around to make sure no one could see, I slowly dragged it towards me.Finn,
I'm not one for encouraging notes but here ya go;
Bud, you can do it. You're not getting any younger.
Break a leg.
- NickThe short and partially motivating note confused me. I tried to shrug it off, but something just stuck. I heard footsteps coming from the stairwell, so I pushed the note back to where it was.
Finn came down wearing a pair of Nike shorts, and a grey t shirt from Crooks & Castles.
(Gr8 brand btw)
"Ready to go?"
I asked him. He nodded and made his way to the door."You know, I really like your room."
He walked around the circumference of my teal room, touching and picking up the small things I had lying around.
I laughed dryly at him,
"Finn, hon, you're in here 6 out of 7 days a week, and we all know I'm too lazy to change anything up in here.
He plopped down next to me on the bed, and opened my MacBook that was lying on the end.
"What? I can't compliment your taste in room decor?"
He started scrolling through the feed of his Instagram, which he was logged into on a regular basis from my laptop.
I rolled my eyes and got up.
"Hey, where you going?"
"I'm just going to grab something to drink, want anything?"
He looked up,
"Water please."
Nodding, I walked down to our kitchen. Taking two waters out of the fridge, I walked back up.
But I stopped myself just behind the doorframe.
Bud, you can do it. You're not getting any younger.
What could he possibly have to do for Nick to leave a note? The kid barely acknowledged me when I walked into his house at 2am.
I shrugged it off. Entering the room, Finn was giggling at the screen.
Giggling.
I sat next to him cautiously.
"Finn. You're worrying me. You never laugh like that."
His cheeks turned pink, before tilting the laptop into my view.
"I was scrolling through your iCloud Drive, Yano, making sure I'm your only best friend. When I came across these gems."
Last year, Finn & I went to Canada's Wonderland for the weekend, and our parents took loads of pictures. The one he was laughing at, was us in front of a small cafe, where we both had serious faces and balloon hats on. Don't ask why.
"Oh my god! I loved that trip!"
I wrapped my arm around him and gave him a side hug.
Going back one photo, it was one my mom had taken unknowingly. We were smiling at each other with churros in our hands.
"I really like this one, Finnie."
He had an arm around me, which closed in tighter.
"Me too."
Before I could even move, he set it as my background.
"There you go. Much better."
He smiled to himself. I smiled back. After we scrolled through more embarrassing photos, we decided to try and make a fort.
"Finn! Finn! Just keep holding onto it!"
I was balanced on the end frame of my bed, leaning over Finns shoulder, holding a blanket up to a shelf on the wall, waiting for pin to clip it on. Madness.
"What?"
He let go of my waist, causing me to fall forward and crash into a mountain of blankets, landing on top of poor Finn.
Before asking if he was okay, being the great friend I am, I started laughing hysterically.
"I just- and then you just- and then we both just- OH MY GOD!"
At this point he was laughing too. By the time the giggles subsided, I realized our closeness.
"O-oh, uh, I'm sorry Ella."
Before I knew it, my lips were connected with his.
I just kissed my best friend. Scratch that. I'm kissing my best friend.
And he kissed back. When we pulled away and my eyes slowly opened, his widened and mine did too.
I got up off of him and sat up.
"Finn, oh my god I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me."
He sat up too. Looking me straight in the eye.
"I've wanted to do that since I met you."
His cheeks were blushing, and by the warmth in my face I knew I was too.
"W-what?"
He slowly bobbed his head.
"Yeah. You have no idea how long I wanted to kiss you. God, every time I see you it's like there's a whole new adventure ahead of us. I like you, Ella. A lot."
Not believing what I was hearing, I kissed him again to make sure I wasn't dreaming. He snaked his arms around my thin torso, and it felt right. Like he was a missing puzzle piece. Resting our foreheads together, I spoke.
"I like you too, Finn. A lot."
He smiled at me mirroring his words.
"Man, I guess I'll have to tell Nick that you beat me to it."
Huh?
He must've seen the confusion on my face, because he answered my expression.
"Nick told me to make my move by today or he'd tell you himself. I mean, i get it. I rant to him a lot. But considering you just did it for me, he's in for a surprise."
I laughed at his statement.
"Well, telling him can wait, we have a fort to build!"
