Hamilton had a recurring tropical malarial infection that came with each summer and had a kidney ailment. The illnesses caught up with him during the Revolution and caused him to miss Washington's famous crossing over the Delaware River. After the war, he spent about two months in bed recovering. Later on, he gotten ill as part of a yellow fever epidemic but was saved by his boyhood friend(and possibly half-brother), Edward Stevens.
