The Culper Spy Ring

The Culper Ring was a organized by American Major Benjamin Tallmadge under orders from General George Washington in the summer of 1778, during the British occupation of New York City at the height of the American Revolutionary War. The "Culper" name was suggested by Washington, who devised it from the Culpeper County, Virginia. The two main members of the ring were Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend, who used "Samuel Culper, Sr." and "Samuel Culper, Jr.", respectively, as aliases. Tallmadge was referred to by the alias "John Bolton."

Although, he wasnt considered part of the ring, Hercules Mulligan was known to have worked with them(he was a spy himself, owned a business in NY)]

1.) Lasted from 1778(British occupation) to 1783(British evacuation)

2.) The failure of Nathan Hale's mission, inspired Washington to promote extreme secrecy in the Spy Ring's operations. 

3.) Information was obtained by the Spy Ring that gave way to the knowledge of the treason of Benedict Arnold(he had  a plan to attack newly-arrived French troops + British plan to counterfeit colonist currency).

4.) Many of the members' name had been lost to history, the identity of "Samuel Culper Junior" wasn't found out to be Robert Townsend until 1929
