Gonna get some major hate for this, but I would just like to point out that I do not hate AOT fans. I just don't like your favorite series.
Let me start off with my first problem with Attack on Titan. The series starts off fresh and new with potential. Then, we reach episode 6 of Season 1, the best episode of the series. Why? Because Eren is not in the episode whatsoever until near the end. How does that make it the best episode? Because it established that no one and I do mean no one, is safe from death in the series. Everything was bleak and dark. It looked as if though the author of the series tricked us into believing that the one we believed was the main character truly wasn't the main character. Then, it had to be ruined with Eren pulling Titan powers from his @$$. That's what really ruined this series.
If I were to break down the basic plot of Attack on Titan, it would go a little like this: It's not the story of a species fighting off extinction, but a run of the mill, shonen series. A teenager with a tragic backstory and absent parents seeks to fight against impossible odds while learning to control powers he didn't know he had. With the help of friends, the protagonist seeks revenge on those who wronged him whilst saving the world.
Think about it, the series may seem like it's new and original, but in reality, it's as cliche as it can get with the gore factor turned up a notch. You can apply this basic plot to almost any shonen series out there. It's nothing new.
Also, the fact that the series tries to tackle religion doesn't bother me (even though I'm a pretty religious person), it's how it does it that bothers me. First, the characters are worshipping something clearly humanmade (the walls) which is kinda absurd and isn't truly tackling religion. If a majority of the world were to be worshipping a golden calf statue, even the most simple-minded of people can understand what's wrong with this picture. Yet, because of it's "high-stakes" nature, Attack on Titan makes it feel okay even though the characters literally have a church for the walls.
(Watch from 0:00 - 0:26)
If Attack on Titan truly wants to tackle religion, it should take notes from Fullmetal Alchemist who tackles religion in a thought-provoking manner.
These are the two main reasons why I absolutely cannot stand watching/reading Attack on Titan. Trust me when I say that in a few years, it's going to be that series that you look back upon and cringe because you used to think it was good when it actually wasn't.
Again, this is all just my opinion and I'd like to hear what y'all think!
