Chapter 2

By the time they reached Kakariko, The moon was high in the sky. Link led Epona over to the spring before jumping off and helping her down. When he set her down, though, he didn't release. He hands remained around her waist and she blushed at how close he was. He smiled and stroked her cheek before taking her hand and leading her in the direction of a hotel,

" I thought we were just picking them up," She said, confused,

"Well, I happen to be exhausted, and you probably are too. Plus, Epona needs a break. We'll head out in the morning" He said, smiling as he opened the door and waved her to go in. She rolled her eyes and walked in,

"Link," A man said as they walked in " Its nice to see your face around here,"

"Hello Renado," Link answered as he came in behind her, "Are the kids asleep?" Renado nodded and looked at the princess,

"And who is this lovely girl?" he asked as he smiled at her,

"I'm Zelda," she said and shook his hand,

"She is the-"

"I'm from Castle Town. He found me after the castle got destroyed. I was lucky, as you might say," she interrupted as she shot him a look. He looked back at her, thoroughly confused,

"Ah, well, it's nice to meet you, Zelda. I'm Renado, shaman of Kakariko. Im sure you must be tired. Right this way," he said, leading them into one of the back rooms where the beds were. Several children and one young girl, Ilia, as she remembered, were already asleep,

"Looks like we only have one bed, sorry about that," The shaman said begins her,

"That's fine, " Link assured him, "I can sleep on the floor," Renado nodded and exited. Link went over to the corner and grabbed some extra blankets and a pillow before laying down on the floor. Zelda went over and layed down in the bed,

"Zelda?" Link whispered and he leaned on his elbow,

"hmm?" She looked over at him,

"Why didn't you want them to know about you?" he asked. She sighed and looked up at the ceiling,

"I don't want to be treated any different than the rest of you. I don't want them to look at me like 'the princess' but just Zelda. The only way to ensure that is to not tell them," She looked down at the triforce on her hand. Her head felt bare without her tiara, which she had stuck in Epona's pouch without him noticing,

"Zel, your going to make a great queen," he said quietly. She looked over at him,

"I wish I didn't have to be," she murmured, hoping he wouldn't hear.

He did,

"What?" he asked, shocked, "You don't want to be queen?"

"I don't have much of a choice," she sat up and looked at him. He got up and crouched near her bed,

"Well, if you did, would you choose a normal life?" She thought for a moment,

"It depends," she finally said,

"On what?" His blue eyes burned with curiosity, and Zelda was tempted to move his dirty blonde hair out of them,

"A life is no life if its spent alone," she said quietly. He leaned slightly closer, as if drawn to her,

"So, if you found someone, you would give up everything for them? Seems a little unfair,"

"I wouldn't be giving up everything. A normal life sounds wonderful as it is, but if I also had them, there isn't anything more I would want," She said as she leaned closer to him. He was extremely handsome, and everything about him was intoxicating,

I've found you, so I have everything I need, she thought as he came closer. She closed her eyes, no longer willing to fight it,

"Link?" a groggy voice said. He pulled away and looked at them,

"Hey Ilia. Go back to sleep. Ill be here in the morning," He said, walking over to her. Zelda looked away, ashamed. Of course he didn't feel for her. How could she have been so blind?

"Ok," Ilia answered before rolling over and returning to sleep,

"Zel?" he said, seeing that she had turned away,

"We should get some sleep," she said, her voice breaking. Link sighed and crawled into his 'bed'.

A single tear rolled down her cheek as she closed her eyes and let sleep take her.
