Mike

When we walked into class the three boys looked around the room of misery and negativity, all of them sighing at the sight of two textbooks labelled 'Troy' and one on the desk next to it labelled 'James', they knew they were in deep shit and the school day hadn't even started yet.

"Good morning boys, welcome back!" Nr Clarke, their lovable professor greeted them. "Morning." They all replied trying to be as enthusiastic as they found but failing miserably.
"Ah, before you go to your seats I wanted to ask you if you'd be interested in joining an AV club? Presuming you know what that is." The boys all froze in their tracks, "For real?" They said in unison, mouths agape. "Yes! So we'll talk about this after 2nd period?" Mr Clarke said smiling at the exited boys, to which they all nodded quickly and shared thrilled glances before retreating to their allocated seats. Dustin and Lucas were sat 2 rows in front of Mike, leaving no way of communication between the 3. He looked at the books on the desks around him, he was sat on the end of a row, all of the names were familiar other than one, a book labelled Will Byers was sat directly next to Mike. New kid.
Mike already felt pitiful to this new boy, he was in the form with Troy and James, the schools bullies. His first look at Hawkins Elementary would be nothing but abusive comments and cruel nicknames, to which Mike had the pleasure of owning one, Frog Face. Lucas and Dustin had theirs of course, Lucas was 'Midnight' due to his dark skin and Dustin was 'Toothless' due to his prominent lack of front teeth, the doing of a genetic disorder called cleidocranial dysplasia, and all together the three of them are know as 'The Freak Show'.

Mike would not allow the names he is called to effect him, he would not allow them to win their game, but when they said things to his friends ,oh, all hell broke loose with Mike Wheeler, Dustin described him as going 'batshit crazy'.

Mike sighed and started longingly at the desk next to his best friends, wishing he could take the place of who ever was placed there. His thoughts were though interrupted by the dull ringing of the bell, indicating their first day of hell had began.

"Class, please may I have your attention," Mr Clarke's voice rose up through the class room, Mike and few others actually looking up to his presence, "we have a new student joining us today, he and his brother have just moved here from the city," Mike noticed a few more students time in at this, ass lickers he thought, "may we please give a warm welcome to... Will Byers!" He finished cheerily, the whole classes attention now trained on the doorway, where a small boy, looking no older than 10, was standing staring at his shoes. Mike almost gasped, it was the boy from earlier, it was him. It was that boy.

And he was sat next to him.

Mike watched eagerly as he approached his desk, his eyes not leaving the boys face though his posture was straight forwards. He has a nice face, mikes subconscious chimed.

Mr Clarke let the students talk about their Summer to one an other, and Mike mentally thanked him, a perfect opportunity to talk to this boy, Will Byers. Mike turned his head in the slightest so he could really take in all his features, just hoping that he wouldn't get caught.

And after being caught he invited Will into the party.
Mike had found a cleric.

Mike had found Will.

30 heads snapped towards the door as two boys with mean faces entered through the doorway, one stood slightly before the other giving him an air of dominance and intimidation. The boy scanned the classroom, looking at each of the pupils faces, some looked down hurriedly whilst others gripped the table in fear, praying they would not have the eyes of the boy placed upon them. Mike sighed as he and Dustin exchanged antagonist glances, whilst Lucas was exchanging death glares with the boy standing further behind.
Eyes landed on Will.
Will was still writing notes down, having not noticed the obvious corruption, having not noticed that the school bully was staring directly at him, a smirk crossing his lips.

"Eh hem." Mr Clarke cleared his throat.

The boy behind only acknowledged him with a small "sorry we're late Mr Clarke, promise it won't happen again." Whereas the boy in front still had his eyes glued on Will Byers head.

"Ok but that will be a half hour detention to make up for the time you've missed- on your first day back of course."
The boys made their way to their desks Troy's (the more intimidating one) eyes still trained on Will Byers , even when he sat down he had turned his head to look at him still, that gruesome smirk still on his face, and as Will sensed his gaze and looked up, Troy gave him a small wink, making Will's breath hitch in an uncomfortable way.

Mike did not like this at all.

When the bell rang indicating break time had been granted to the children of Hawkins, there was a chaotic rush to leave the class rooms as fast as possible, other than a few students, who would rather not be caught up in the waves of teenagers, that hung back a bit.
Mike Wheeler and Will Byers packed away their text books leisurely, unlike the major percentage of their class that ran out of the room as soon as the bell had sounded.
"Dustin, Lucas, oh and you Mike, may I take 10 minuets of your break to discuss time tables and the place of gathering for the AV club?" Mr Clarke said, to which the three nodded their heads and smiled excitedly at him.
Mike was so immersed in the conversation he had forgotten about Will, who after hesitantly going to tap on Mikes shoulder and deciding against it, was walking out in to the hallway, where Troy and James stood leaning casually against the lockers, waiting to attack.

Mike's eyes widened as remembered and he ran out the room, "Will!" He called to the boy, "Where are you going?" Will looked back at Mike ,eyes filled with relief, "Cmon, you're in the party." Mike finished.

"Ok, but what the Hell?" Lucas asked as Mike walked back into the room, Dustin peering over his shoulder, "What was that about?" Lucas questioned.
"Yeah what he said." Dustin intervened.
"You guys, this is Will. He's joined our party. Will is our cleric." Mike said happily,  stepping aside to show them Will, who was feeling his anxiety rising.
"Dude." Dustin said shortly to Mike.
"You can't just let him join our party!"
"What do you mean I can't just let him?!"
"Dustin is right Mike! You should've checked with us first! This is not okay- we barely even know him!"
"Yeah!"
Mike curled his fists in frustration.
Will's gaze retired to the floor once again.
Lucas stared into the face of Mike, an expression reading 'my friends are idiots' drawn on his face.
Dustin was still peering over Lucas' shoulder ,but this time at Will.
Mr Clarke stood awkwardly amongst the four boys.

"The time table is every day after school, school closes at 8:30 so you have as long as you'd need. Come to me to get the key, you are dismissed."

Will was the first to leave the room, and not turning back to Mikes calls this time.

Mike looked after Will, watching his small frame turn the corner, presumably to the staff office where they would tell him his next class. He felt more rising pity to this boy, he had seen the way Troy was looking at him, but it was different, this time it seemed more sinister- well more than usual, Mike feared for Will, he was alone out there, and Mike couldn't help him. He'd already figured that out, he figured it out as soon as he looked into those eyes. Will was lost, but mike would not give up on trying to find him, even if there was nothing to find.

He had to find him. He had to fix him.
