Chapter 4: The Secret Wedding

Teehee!! I've been waiting for this part since the beginning!

Summary: Merlin and Rose get married in secret.
Side note: As much as I want smut, I'm trying to keep this PG so there will be none of that. I might make a chapter of it on my oneshot book if you want tho.😉

     Several months later....
     Merlin couldn't help himself. He hated being apart from Rose for very long so he'd made up his mind of what he wanted to do.
     One day, when he was alone with Rose, he turned to her and got down on one knee, "Rose, my love, I am completely and utterly in love with you. I have been since the moment I laid eyes on you and my love has only grown over the time we've been together.
     "I don't care about this feud between our families. I want it to end but if it won't then I'll settle for running away with you.
     "Rose, will you marry me?"
     A beautiful smile spread across Rose's face. "Did you ever doubt my answer would be anything but yes? Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!"
     They fell into one another's arms.

     That same day, Merlin and Rose made a visit to Haven to see Lady Angel.
     Haven was a very small city; compared to the rest of Auradon, it was like a small antichamber inside of a large castle.
     The crowning jewel of this city was the rather large church that made up most of the city. Other than the church were a few homes for people who had no where else to go and many sparkling fountains.
     Lady Angel ran the church in Haven. She was a very kind-hearted woman who did not care for anger, hatred, or violence.
     Merlin and Rose immediately went to see her. When they told her that they wished to be married, Lady Angel gave out a cry of delight.
     "The gods have answered my prayers at last! Finally this silly feud between the Swan's and Emrys' can end in peace! Of course I'd love to bind the two of you in marriage but you must be sure this is what you want."
     "Yes." They both said in unison.
     "Very well."
     Lady Angel took them into the church. As they walked, both found that their clothes had changed. Now, Merlin was dressed in ceremonial princely garments and Rose in a long white wedding gown.
     "You look so beautiful, my love."
     "You don't look so bad yourself."
     When they got to the end of the aisle together, they clasped hands and Lady Angel said, "Marriage is a very special bond. This ceremony shall bind the two of you together forever. So, without further ado, Merlin repeat after me:
     "I, state your name and house."
     "I, Merlin Emrys of the kingdom of Powys,"
     "Do so swear,"
     "Do so swear,"
     "To love, care for, and protect,"
     "To love, care for, and protect,"
     "Rose,"
     "My beloved Rose,"
     "As my wife."
     "As my wife."
     "For as long as we both shall live."
     "For as long as we both shall live."
     "Now slide the ring on her finger." Lady Angel commanded. Merlin did so. (Sliding on the ring at the top.) "Now, Rose, repeat after me:
     "I, state your name and house."
     "I, Rose Swan of the kingdom of Paradise,"
     "Do so swear,"
     "Do so swear,"
     "To love, care for, and obey,"
     "To love, care for, and obey,"
     "Merlin,"
     "My beloved Merlin,"
     "As my husband,"
     "As my husband,"
     "For as long as we both shall live."
     "For as long as we both shall live."
     "Now you slide the ring on his finger." Rose did so. (His was similar to hers but with a thicker band.)
     "By the power vested in me by the authority of the Empress and the church of Haven, I hereby pronounce you husband and wife. Merlin, you may kiss your bride."
     With that, Merlin pulled Rose into his arms and kissed her with more love and passion than he ever had before.
     When he finally broke the kiss, he and his newlywed bride gave Lady Angel their goodbyes and raced out the door.
     Merlin held Rose close as he told her, "I will come to you tonight. Be ready for me for tonight I must love you as my wife."

     The two returned to their own homes soon afterwards. Rose went back to spending time with her friends while Merlin went home only to learn from his brother that  Lancelot had gone off to fight Adrian and Karayan as recompense for something they'd done earlier.
     Apparently, while Merlin had been busy falling in love with Rose, Adrian and Karayan had gotten more and more cruel with their revenge plots to the point where Lancelot, the noblest of them all, had gone off to fight.
     Merlin and Mordred ran off to stop the fight but they were too late. Adrian had already killed Lancelot. (Omg I'm crying 😭😭😭 I hate you Adrian!)
     Merlin grew angry. "Adrian! Now you fight me!!"
     The two began to fight, swords and magic flying but Merlin was more skilled at both and Adrian followed Lancelot to the grave. It was only afterwards that Merlin realized what he'd done.
     He began to run away when he was stopped by his brother. "Merlin, you don't have to run!"
     "Mordred, I just killed a man! The Empress will banish me! Best I go now and save her the trouble!"
     "No one has to know!"
     "But I would know! I'm sorry, brother, but I have to go!"
     With that, Merlin ran away.

     Word reached Paradise quickly. When Nicholas learned of what happened, he immediately wanted to retaliate at the death of Adrian. "Merlin Emrys must die!" He kept protesting but the Empress would allow no retaliations lest he be removed from his throne early.
     He had to let the incident go and change his plans to her now being engaged to Karayan. Rose had hid in her room all day, upset. Her father assumed it was because of Adrian's death. He had no idea that she was upset because the love of her life and her husband had been banished and she could never see him again.
     The very thought made her wish she'd had stayed with him rather than going home. She had no idea that Merlin would find his way back to her. He'd just got Rose and he wasn't giving her up that easily!
                         * * * * *
     It was about midnight when Rose was awakened by the sound of someone knocking on her balcony doors. She quickly glanced toward the balcony doors to find Merlin knocking on them.
     Surprised, she got out of bed and rushed to the doors. She threw them open and looked upon the face of the man she loved.
     "Merlin? But how?"
     "Nevermind that, my love."
     Merlin took her hand and led Rose back into her room.
     "I love you, my wife."
     "And I you."
     He kissed Rose before leading her over to the bed. Then he loved her as his wife, just as he said he would.

     The morning light shining through the windows was what awoke the couple the next morning. Neither wanted to leave the other's arms but had no choice. Both dressed and kissed goodbye before Merlin left the way he came.
     Rose went back to bed, crying once more. She had no idea when her husband and true love would return and it was tearing her apart inside. (Welcome to my world sweetie!)
     Sometime later in the day, her father came in to check on her.
     "Now, Rose, I know you are upset about Adrian's death, we all are, but you must move on. Karayan is a good man and Adrian's brother and will take just as good care of you as Adrian would've. Believe me, daughter, this heartache will pass."
     (Idk the father was clueless in the original as well.)
                            * * * * *
     Sometime even later in the day, Nicholas was holding council with Karayan. He had no idea that the man he was conversing with was, at that very moment, plotting the king's demise.
     "I just don't understand it. I've never seen her like this, Karayan. It worries me."
     "Milord, I fear that the cause of Rose's emotions are not just from my brother's untimely death."
     "What then?"
     "I couldn't sleep last night out of worry for my future bride. It came to my attention that, at midnight, a man snuck into her chambers."
     Nicholas' face grew a very angry shade of red. "Are you implying that this man did something to my daughter?"
     "I fear so."
     "But who would-?" Realization suddenly struck the king. "Blasted Emrys'! It has to be one of those boys from Powys!"
     "And not just any man of Powys."
     "Who?"
     "Why the crown prince himself. Merlin. Emrys."
                             * * * * *
     Merlin was confused when he was brought back to Auradon. But his confusion didn't last long when the king of Paradise ordered him to be thrown in prison.
     "And what reason could you have? I have already paid for my punishment in full!"
     "You can never pay the punishment for this crime! You defiled my daughter, you filthy fiend!"
     Merlin couldn't believe it. "I did no such thing! I love your daughter! You'd know that if you ever paid her any attention!"
     "Well I'm certain my daughter does not return your so-called 'affections'!" The king roared. "Take him away!"
     Rose ran out to stop them. "No! Please don't!"
      "Be still!" Her father commanded, pulling her away from Merlin.
     "No! I love him!"
     The king was surprised for a moment then his surprise turned into fiery anger. "No daughter of mine will throw herself in with this family! You will be punished for your insolence! The boy dies at first light!"
     The guards threw Merlin into a cell against Rose's wishes. Both of them cried throughout the night.
     "I'm sorry, Rose." Merlin kept muttering over and over. "This is all my fault. All my fault!"
