Chapter 11 - The Goodbye

Upon having those thoughts, that he was not doing a good job at protecting Lety, at loving her, at being what she needed, it finally made sense. All that she had said about needing time, about him fighting for her. He could swear anything he wanted, but the acts were going to be more important than any words he could ever speak. And why would Leticia believe his words? He had made promises and told her things, and every last thing had been a manipulation to his own end. Even when the words became true, he was still using them to get Lety to do what he wanted.

He knew now that what he had to do was what Leticia had asked. He had to give her time and space so that she could figure things out for herself. This would have to be his first act of love, letting her go.

No sooner had Fernando made this decision than the front door opened and Leticia exited. With her was her suitcase, and her purse. Behind her were her parents, ready to go out, apparently to take her to the airport.

She looked startled to see him standing there. "Don Fernando, what are you still doing here?"

Ella pareció sorprendida a verlo allí. "Don Fernando, ¿qué hace usted aquí todavía?"

"Hi Lety, ummm... I just finished dealing with that situation that presented itself when we arrived."

"Hola Lety, ummm ...

"What situation?" Don Erasmo questioned. He was interested in everything having to do with his daughter and especially what happened in the streets of his neighborhood.

"It was just Roman," Fernando answered quickly, he couldn't imagine that Leticia wanted her father to know that Miguel had been around. Leticia shot him a look of gratitude. Despite everything they would always be complicit in everything. They could read each other with just looks. They seemed to have an innate understanding that had existed since day one.

"But don't worry Don Erasmo, Roman won't be bothering Lety anymore, I have taken care of it." Fernando tried to communicate through his words, to Leticia as well, that this also included their other guest.
