Chapter 16~ Track team try-outs, all welcome!

Sayin' hold on, hold on

And be strong, be strong

Pick ya feet off the ground

Spead your wings and don't look down

And turn your world around (turn your world around)

Reach up to the clouds

To the beat of the song my feet hit the ground; I hummed the tune as I look across the track

“Early start?” someone called out and I saw Mason waving towards me

I pulled out my headphone and stopped running

“Yep” he jogged towards me stopping and passing me a bottle

“Thanks” I smiled and took a swing of water

“No problem” he walked over to the side of the track and sat down with me in his follow

“Anyway is there a reason your training at…” he looked at his phone

“4:00am”

“I want to get onto the school track team” I said sitting next to him

“Oh right! You know you could just talk to Chris and he might put in a good word for you”

“Chris?”

“Yeah he’s the captain of the track team”

“Oh…. Nah I don’t play dirty, I want in fair and square” I put down the bottle and stretched my legs out so I could touch my toes

“Right well it’s your funeral” he patted my back, got up and walked away

“What?”

“I want 20 laps around the whole field, 50 push ups, 30 burpees, another 20 laps, then 100 star jumps!” the track team coach called out with Chris to he’s side

“Anything to add Miller?” he looked to Chris and he smiled and pointed to me

“She does double” everyone looked at me with either confused or guilty looks

I shrugged and started

It was the day of the track team try outs, and most of the Miller boys were there, even Harry and Lewis but Thomas was nowhere in sight. They of course were just watching up in the stands though and had no say in what Chris and the coach were going to make me do

By the end I was extremely tired but tried not the show it, most of the people trying out were gone and it was only me and two guys who looked like friends and continued to give me the evils

“My, my three left now what do you think should be next?” the coach called out to Chris who was talking on the phone

I looked up to the stands where the boys were and Lewis was on the phone also

Great, I bet they’re talking about me

I thought sarcastically

“Um…” Chris walked back

“I say a little break then I’ll come back to you on that” the coach nodded at his answer and walked away with the two guys in his shadow trying to take a peek at his notes that he had been writing all try-outs

“Maddie” Chris called me over

“Lewis wants to talk to you” he pointed to the stairs that lead up the stands where Lewis was standing

I nodded and jogged over to him

“Mum said you might need this” he handed me asyringe that read “insulin”

“Pfft um why?” I said looking away from him

“Maddison I’m a medical student, I know what insulin is for, and if you didn’t tell us before then I’m guessing you don’t want us to know so I won’t tell anyone promise”

“…Really?”

“Yes really! Pinky promise” he put out his pinky

“Pinky promise?”

“Yeah didn’t you know all Miller boys are children at heart” he smiled, and we locked pinkys

“Ok, well do you need any help with….” He pointed to the syringe still in his hand

“No thanks I can do it” he passed me it and waved walking away

I nodded and walked over to the bathrooms

Once I had finished up injecting myself and disposing of the syringe I walked back out to the field, feeling full of energy

“Right then I want you all back tomorrow, Chris has decided you all need a rest but tomorrow you all better be ready for the worst day of your young lives” the coach called out with Chris at his side

Great went through all that trouble for nothing…

I thought, walking to the girl’s locker room to change

“What was trouble?” a manly voice asked loudly in the empty locker room

I looked up in surprise and saw Thomas leaning on the door

“Let me guess, you have the same ‘mind reading’ thing as Mason”

“Pff no, I’m just smart dumb ass”

I rolled my eyes at his comment and moved on, walking past Thomas and out to the other boys

“Hey! I asked you a question!” Thomas called out to me

“And I didn’t answer it” I turned to him while walking for a second, smiled and walked away
