My hand jerks to the gun resting on my hip at the sound of a scream. I approach in the direction of the scream, hefting the gun from my belt. I hope no one's hurt, though we don't have any large predators in these woods as far as I know. I sense the stillness of the forest, and in the distance I see a small white cottage. I hope the Volkes are okay, Gemine isn't as spry as she used to be. I still don't know why they insisted on living in their cottage in the woods.
I load a few bullets and pick up the pace, nearing the treeline. I briskly lift my gun at a movement at the door.
