Little kids from all over Italy that were learning how to figure skate were zooming across the ice while smiling and yelling in Italian. Yurio looked a little annoyed that he couldn't tell what was going on. The pop music stopped all of a sudden and the little kids were moved off the ice. Men moved a black carpet over the ice to make room for men in suits and women in fancy dresses. They moved to the center in a giant blob of black, white, and blue, until finally a microphone was passed to Auson who was pushed in front of the people.
"Thank you all for joining us today for the first Women's Men's Finals ever held in Italy!" He yelled as the crowd screamed in happiness, "A little too happy are we?" He laughed, "I am proud to represent my mother who was too sick to join us today. She was so excited and I would love if all of you prayed for her to get better... ANYWAY WHO IS READY!"
He sounded like a football coach as he spoke for another few minutes as the crowd applauded after each pause or break in his speech. I clapped for him at the end, but Yurio refused to contribute. I elbowed him in the stomach, but being as stubborn as he is, he refused.
"How would you feel if nobody applauded after your performance?" I whisper into his ear
"They won't be applauding," He replies at the same volume as me, "They'll be screaming in awe."
"Prove it," I dare him
He moves uncomfortably close to my face and whispers in my ear, "I'll do more than prove it, (Y/N)."
I felt an odd feeling when he said my name. I thought he would never call me by my name again...
Before I could react he moved away from my face and leaned back into his seat. I smile. Not smirk. S-M-I-L-E-D. I felt giddy for a second before I looked back on the ice where Auson was looking at me. He smiled at me as he and the other businessmen moved off the ice. The black carpet was removed and the zamboni came in it's place.
I sat there smiling and watching the little children dance to the music or wave to the man driving the zamboni, where he would wave back and give them a goofy smile in return.
Finally the music stopped again and the speakers came on, "We are going to have a few of our own personal skaters perform for a bit, while we set up a bit more and the competitors warm up. Then, we are going to have a draw backstage to decide who is coming up first. All competitors please meet us in the back."
We met in the back and stretch for half an hour until they finally came back. The first to perform was going to be Yuuri, Yurio, and then me.
Last. Last. That is the worst timing ever. Remember what Nordan used to say? First is the best, so that nobody can copy your performance and the audience is at it's best. They aren't drunk, yet, they are at full attention, and they are more than happy to stand up and cheer you on. Last is second best, so that you are the freshest in the judges minds, but it isn't like that anymore. I have to beat Yuuri and Yurio's scores. Hmmm. I GOT IT!
I got out a piece of paper and write down some of the changes I think would be best for my performance. I then went into the back and removed my clothes and changed into my blue robe. Then I walked into the secret room in the back where all competitors were to sit. It had an open front right in front of the ice. A skater could actually run into the wall and fall over into the room. Although, it was just me and Yurio since Yuuri was about to go on and I doubt Yuuri was going to slam dunk himself into the room during his performance.
I held my breath as it finally came. The time where we would make history. Yuuri stood in the center of the ice as he waited for the speaker to stop talking and for the music to begin. He was wearing a suit that looked extremely similar to one I saw Victor wear in his second year at the Grand Prix.
"Two years ago nobody would believe this guy could be second in the Grand Prix last year, but thanks to his former coach, Vi-"
We've all heard this story a thousand times before.
"No kidding," Yurio says as he looks out at the ice
"Katsuki will be skating to Romeo and Juliet," The announcer announces
Yurio rolled his eyes and moved his head so his hair would fall into his face, "No surprise, Yuuri. He needs to get out of his lovey dovey bubble and start a new theme."
He has a point there, Yuuri.
Yurio distracted me for a few seconds that I didn't notice that Yuuri had already started.
Yuuri was zooming across the ice doing forward crossovers and one foot turns. He was amazing. He went for a quadruple lutz, but wiped out completely. He pulled himself up and continued his forward crossovers. He was spinning and turning and moving his arms to the intense rhythm. He sped forward and prepared for his quadruple toe loop. He landed on his feet with great success.
"This doesn't look good for him, Yurio," I say, "He looks nervous. Look at his legs."
"I see that too," He looks over at the snack bar in distaste
"You are so distracting," I say as I look at his deadpanned face
"How so?" He asks," I'm not the one that walks around town looking for a boyfriend."
"I didn't go looking for Auson, he came to me," I say
"Why would he come to you?" He asks
"What do you mean by that?" I ask him
"I me-" He sighs and rubs his temple, "Decide for yourself, idiot."
I ignore him and look back to Yuuri and it wasn't good he fell again on his axel. I clench my teeth.
Is there something wrong?
He does his one foot spins- those are basic routines- and his crossovers, but all the while he is moving his arms to symbolize disaster and war. He moves to center ice, where he does a fan spiral and instantly moves into a butterfly jump, landing perfectly. It seemed alright, but I could feel his worry from all the way across the ice. He moves back into his spins and small jumps, but all I could think was this isn't Yuuri. Something is wrong. Is Victor okay? Is his mother and father okay? What about his dog? He loves his dog and I know he would be thrown off completely if his dog died. Even more so if something happened to Victor.
He performed a waltz jump and turned it into a camel spin.
Good, good. Go YUURI!
"Shut up," Yurio growls
He he continued the spin and turned it into a haircutter spin. I look at his movements in awe. What he is feeling.. He was using it to help his performance! He moved down into a sit spin with a twist variation. He seemed to be searching the crowd as he moved up and made a one handed biellmann spin. As he returned his feet to the ground he seemed almost.. disappointed.
He had the same look he always has when he skates, or at least from what I have seen, but there was something, a feeling perhaps, just- peeli-no- radi- not quite right- emitting! Emitting off of his body. Kind of when you look at your ex and you can tell that they have had a horrible day. No. That isn't a good example. More of like when you meet that one person your friend thinks you'll and you are completely taken away by their beauty, but when you really look underneath, you see a sad, broken soul. That seems a lot better. A lot better.
"You would think that wouldn't you?" I could hear Yurio mutter
Before I could even take notice, Yuuri's performance had finished and Yurio was already leaving the room to prepare himself further.
Yuuri entered the room and sighed. His face was red and he looked tired. Then it hit me. I never talked to him all morning, no one had in fact.
"Oh Yuuri," I say, "Did something bad happen?"
He just smiled at me and rubbed my back, "Nothing for you to worry about, (Y/N). Everything is fine and everyone is safe."
