8:06 am – Police Station
7 hours and 49 minutes after
Gracie was staring at the ground, and Theo was worried.
He'd stormed out of his interrogation- which you were apparently not supposed to do- to find her sitting there, shaking, with her arms wrapped around herself.
"Gracie," Theo said. "Are you okay?"
Gracie sat there, and Theo knelt next to her.
"Love, what's wrong?"
She looked up at him, and Theo stared into her hollow eyes.
"She's never coming back, T. She's gone."
"I know baby, I know."
"No, Theo. You don't. She's gone. Amelia is gone and she's never coming back, and they don't know who did it."
"They'll figure it out."
"But what if they don't? What if I spend the rest of my life without my sister, not knowing who's responsible?"
"You won't. They'll figure it out."
And then Gracie asked the question that they'd both had, deep down, in the back of their minds.
"What if I'm next?"
Theo clenched his fists. "I won't let that happen."
Gracie turned her haunted eyes away from him and resumed staring at the floor.
