I wake up in the middle of the night. Well, I guess not really the night because it is light outside.
I look over at Corey, and notice he looks kind of... cold. Suddenly, I feel cold too. I look out the window and see that it's... raining? How did that happen? I ask myself. Just last night it was clear... No clouds! I look again and notice it's windy too.
Corey has goosebumps all over his arms and looks kind of pale. I slide the leaf off my body and put it on top of him. I take the teddy bear and tuck it under his head. "There," I say, happy that Corey looks more comfortable.
I fall back asleep.
The hut starts shaking. I look around, but Corey is not here.
"Hello?" I ask. "Corey?" Suddenly, the roof flies off the hut. Rain pours in, and I can feel the wind surround me. The hurricane lifts the hut into the sky, bringing me with it. We swirl around, and then, I'm back on the ground.
I see Corey's limp, pale body lying there, his limbs bent in ways limbs should never be bent. I kneel down beside him and start to cry. I bury my face into his shirt, and smell...
Dead leaves?
I take my face off the mattress and scream, hyperventilating from the shock of my nightmare. Corey bolts upright and stares at me with wide eyes.
"What happened?" He says, sitting on the bed beside me. His eyes are full of concern.
"I-I..." I gasp. "I had a n-nightmare.... There was a hurricane... and you, you died and... I was just so scared!!! I-I... I don't know... I just..." I stammer. I turn and bury my face into his shirt, just like in my nightmare, but this time, I don't wake up, this time, he doesn't smell like dead leaves, this time, he wraps his strong arms around me. "Shhh..." he soothes. "I'm still here, I won't leave you all alone. I won't die..." I nod and look up at him. " Thank you..." I whisper.
Corey and I sit there for a while, or at least until I stop sobbing. I sniff one final time and stand up. Corey looks at me, and smiles, shaking his head. "What?" I ask, exasperated.
"You care..." he says. "Well of course I care!!! You are the only other person on this freaking island, I don't want to be all alone!!" I exclaim. Corey chuckles. "Just a couple days ago, it seemed like you didn't even want anything to do with me!!" He says. "Well, in my defence, I wasn't sure if you were a cannibal or something, so..." I roll my eyes and sit down again. "Is it still raining?" I ask, trying to change the subject.
"Three hours later, and it's still raining..." I say impatiently.
"Relax, Leila. These kinds of storms last for a long time... I wouldn't be surprised if we are stuck here for another day or so." Corey sighs.
"I'm bored." I say. "You've already said that what, 13 times?" he shakes his head. "Well, what are we going to do?" I ask. "We could... play rock, paper, scissors." Corey says with a shrug.
"Why not," I say.
