Heroes of Olympus was unnecessary. Percy Jackson was a great series, and had a satisfying ending that felt finished and completed the story. And no one was asking for an extension. Last Olympian didn’t leave anyone begging for more.
The end of the original series would have been a great place for Riordan to stop. He created a beautiful fantasy world based on real-life mythology with fantastic writing and characters. Had he moved on to a different series, even to something like Magnus Chase (the same universe with different mythology), everyone would have been happy. The fans get more of the author they have grown to love, while experiencing an new story with new characters.
But is that what we got? No. We got an extension of the old story with very few decent new characters and an extremely forced plot.
There’s almost no character development for the pre-existing characters (once again stating how unnecessary it was for them to be there), and for the matter, there’s next to no development for the new characters either. Whatever is there is incredibly forced. What do I mean by forced?
