Nothing ever happens because it’s important to the story. No, that would be too easy. Moving the plot along? Let’s go painfully slowly.

Everything happens because the plot wants it too. Go back to the last three books of the series, and open to a random page in the middle. Tell me, was whatever happening on that page important to the story? Or was it useless shenanigans like most of the things they do?

Their tasks are often unimportant or were a result of their stupid decision. Most of the time, I don’t even understand what they’re doing or why. Everything was supposed to be leading up to the final fight with Gaia, but the book couldn’t have been half as long if Riordan cut out all of the unimportant stuff that was there for filler.
