Flashbacks are a common way to show the reader a backstory event 'in real time' but they must be used with care. Anytime when you take the story from the present to the past, it interrupts the flow.
1. Only use a flashback if it propels the story forward and the backstory is crucial.
2. Flashbacks should reveal something important, not explain.
3. Get in and get out - no flab allowed.
4. Give it punch - the event should have a huge impact on the current scene & emotions at work.
5. Timing is everything: build up to the reveal and create suspense.
