Chapter Nine

She felt trapped, her legs twisting to be set free, they felt slick and heavy. Lana's face twisted in anguish as she tried to unwrap her legs from the sheets, her forearms burning from something unknown.

Another snap of thunder sounded from outside, her hands clawed at her face trying not to see her past.

Her legs curled into her stomach, the wind whistled against the window warning her of the next rumble of thunder. It hit the sky hard, causing her heart to race and for her mouth to open releasing her scream.

Her skin felt raw from her hands trying to beat her awake, the feeling of her own nails digging into her arms reminding her of what she tried desperately to forget.

As flashes of lighting struck, her mind played the brutal scenes once more. Her head burying into her pillow, trying to hide herself in the darkness. Her voice soon turned hoarse from her desperate cries.

"Please, please, please, please," she whispered, too quickly for anyone else to make out, "Stop. Stop, stop stop..." she was silent for a moment, her legs stopped wrestling against the covers, her hands stilling.

Her body just moved up and down, heaving, begging to breath in as much as she could.

"Stop!" She screamed, the sharp sound of lightning breaking her state of calm. Another bang came, but this time much closer, she was pulled up to a sitting position from hands that weren't her own.

"Lana! Lana wake up!" Her eyes shot open, red and puffy, her face wet with tear, her hair stuck to her glossy cheeks, he brushed it aside, grabbing some cloth to dry her face.

Her eyes were wild and alert, watching the room for anything, she could still hear the rumbles outside but she was too focused on the danger of what could be in her room, unsure of where she really was.

"You're not there anymore." Kassian said firmly, no whisper about it, he was sure and confident, allowing her to still and listen to him, "You're in California, it's twenty twenty one. It's just you, Lana Harris, with Kassian Federov and Isabella Martin. Nobody else." Her breathing was shaky as she stared at him.

She did nothing but breath and look into his eyes, and that's all he did too.

His hands gripped both of hers, tucking them into his, she assumed to keep her from hurting herself further. She wanted to go to the bathroom and check her face and arms, how badly had she tried to wake up?

Her teeth chattered quietly, her body so hot before now melting into a cold sweat, she shook in his grip, tears brimming her eyes. Slowly he released her hands and went into the bathroom, she blocked out the sound of the bath water running and instead stared at her hands, red and sweaty, and yet so cold.

She could feel his presence re-enter her room, but she just continued to stare at her hands, her mind overflowing with images just minutes ago, now quiet and numb.

He knelt down beside her bed, taking her hands once more within his own, his thumbs gently massaging the tender skin, "You're safe."

After a few moments of her just sitting their blankly he finally rose to his feet, "Can you walk to the bathroom?" She didn't respond, gently he lifted her chin to meet his eyes, "are you okay with me taking you?" She wanted to burst into tears again, the feeling building in her chest.

After giving him a soft nod he leaned down and grabbed under her knees, and wrapped his other around her back, taking her to the warm bathroom, it smelt like Bella's candles which pushed her reality to the front of her head again, she was here.

"Is this okay?" She nodded once more, slowly without any sudden movements he removed her clothes, folding them neatly by the door, not once looking anywhere but her face.

He helped her into the warm water and then tied her hair into a pony tail to keep her face and neck cool.

He turned himself around, his back now to the wall of the bath, allowing her that privacy.

She curled into herself, the water circling her cold body, her eyes strayed to Kassian who sat slumped next to her, not saying anything, she thanked him in her head.
She sat in there until the water grew cold, he had to carry her out and change her into some fresh pyjamas, he helped her into bed, and then sat in the chair in the corner of the room until she drifted asleep once more.

Lana squeezed her eyes tight, her head thumped at the action, her throat was dry and her face felt tight from the tears, she rose carefully trying not to get head rush.

Her window was cracked open allowing a warm breeze to blow in and through her hair, it was tangled and messy, she felt dirty.

She moved to the bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror, small red crescents were cut into her upper arms and face, scratch marks left from the night before, she looked like she'd been mauled by a lion.

She turned towards the shower head, thinking about washing her hair, but the tub below was still filled with water from a few hours ago.

Taking a damp cloth she dabbed at the cuts and raw skin, then drinking some water and brushing through her hair she finally tied it up.

"Lana?" A knock came from her bedroom door, she glanced at herself once more before going to answer, Bella stood before her in a classy outfit, a black and white plaid dress with a white shirt tied around the front, "would you like some pancakes?" Her eyes had instantly widened, taking in Lana's appearance, tear stricken and rosy, she desperately want to ask if she could help her in anyway or ask what happened but held it back, she had noticed Kassian had looked just as tired, had they been fighting last night again?

"Yes, that'd be nice, thank you." Bella smiled at her wearily before leaving her alone.

Lana turned back to her room, deciding to put on some black trousers, a small beige top, with a shirt to cover her arms.

"Maybe you should stay home today, keep looking into those twins?" Kassian suggested, though with a firm tone telling her it's for the best.

With a deep breath she quickly gave in, she was exhausted, "good idea."

"Okay, we'll see you later today!" Bella called from the door, "bye!"

"Bye..." Lana mumbled back.
