Chapter 10

Lana shuffled through some papers; student files and scholarship records.

She pushed the office chair over to the computers to go through more school information and documents.

She'd spent the day at home, like Kassian had told her to, she'd almost been quite thankful for him making her stay but her pride wouldn't let her do that.

"I'm not seeing much here." Lana muttered to Kassian, who sat next to her searching for all the new residents in town. "We don't even know their names."

"Okay, let's just leave it for tonight." Kassian replied.

They'd been in the office for over four hours diving into the backgrounds of Isabella's classmates, in the last half an hour they decided to try and find more about the siblings they'd noticed.

They'd had no luck though.

They both rose at the same time, closing the space between them.

Lana's chest brushed against Kassians, just barely.

Lana's stomach dropped at the sudden mood change, she expected him to have moved back by now, or make some snide remark. But he didn't, he was almost frozen there, possibly waiting for her to move first.

She instead stared at his hoodie, the frayed ends of string coming out of the hood, obviously broken from him chewing them.

It had felt like hours had past since they were sat on the computers, but really it had only been a minute.

As she stared her eyes snapped to his arm, that began to rise, his hand hesitated for a moment before gently putting his for finger and thumb on her chin and lifting her head up, moving her eyes to meet his.

"I'm sorry." He whispered, her brows furrowed.

What could he be sorry about, she wondered.

"I'm sorry for the weather joke I'd made on our way out here." She thought for a moment, then remembered.

The day they had left to go on the helicopter Kassian had tried to scare her by bringing up her fear of thunder.

She watched his features, her eyes searching his.

Sincere.

He was genuinely really sorry that he'd said it, she assumed his joke had come to light the other night by her panic and he'd realised it was more hurtful than he'd realised.

"I should never have mentioned it, I know the depth of the situation. I know better. I am truly sorry." She moved her hands to his, holding his wrist and forearm in a comforting way.

"It's okay Kassian. It's okay." She squeezed his arm for a second then let go, finally stepping out of their bubble.

It almost made her uncomfortable, this side of him, it didn't come out a lot, very rarely, mainly on long stake outs or intense missions.

She left the room and decided to go straight to bed, leaving him stood alone in the office.
