"911 what's your emergency?" The voice was faint over the ringing in your ear.

You grunted and sucked a breath in as you pulled yourself to sit against a cement barrier. "Yeah we've been shot." You finally got out between gritted teeth.

"Is the attacker still nearby?"

Your tired eyes traveled to the three men laying in the ground a few feet away. One had an arrow protruding from him, another had your knife in him, the last simply lay in a puddle of blood. "No." You breathed out.

You were sitting on the ground and your eyes drifted to the man laying sprawled out beside you. You reached over and grunted at the pain that danced up your side. Your fingers dug into his shirt and you pulled the unconscious body closer to you.

"Is there someone else with you miss?"

"Yeah." You sat up against the crumbling wall behind you. "Clint Barton. We're both with Shield." You said through gritted teeth as you pulled Clint so that his head was on your lap.

"Very well. Make sure to keep pressure on your wound. Focus on helping yourself before Mr. Barton. Help will be there in three minutes."

You huffed in understanding while making it a point to push your hand onto Clint's side.

"Can you please give me some basic information to get Shield aware of the situation."

You laid your head back against the wall and swallowed. You tried to answer her. You wanted to, but you were at a loss for words.

"Miss?"

In your subconscious you heard the sirens of approaching vehicles before the darkness over took you completely.

~~~
A soft beeping could be heard to your left, and even with your eyes closed the light was still too bright. You squinted them closed tighter and grunted in annoyance.
"Miss (L/n) How do you feel?" A voice carried from your right.
"Like shit." You answered honestly and heard a snort of amusement. You cracked one eye open and looked over to where the voices were. A nurse was smiling to herself while writing on a clipboard. Behind her Clint leaned on the door frame with a smirk on his face.
"Well we will get everything else cleared up and you can leave in about an hour." The nurse said before leaving.
You laid your head back on the pillow and sighed with closed eyes. "So how bad is it?" You asked the man who moved to the seat beside you.
"Well it will scar." He shrugged as you looked at him. "But you'll live. Surprisingly clean shot." He finished.
You nodded slowly. "How are you?" You asked but before he could answer the doctor walked in and gave Clint a pointed look.
"I'll leave you two at it. I'll be back to pick you up." Clint said and you nodded in response.
~~~
After the doctor had gone over some things about how to keep the area clean and such you were free to go. You changed back into regular clothes that Clint had brought you.

"Ready?" Clint asked as you stepped into the hall.

"Yeah." You nodded and started to walk beside him to the elevator. "So tell me what happened exactly." You said as the two of you stepped in the box.

"Well since you kept pressure on me instead of yourself." He gave you a look that made you want to shrink into the corner. "You lost a lot of blood. I woke up on the way here. I didn't need surgery like you so here I am." He said and you followed him off the elevator. "You on the other hand have been out for two days and everything else you already know."

You listened to everything he said but stopped short when he stepped in front of you just outside the main doors.

"Why did you focus on saving me instead of yourself."

You blinked at him as if it were obvious. "Becuase you have a lot more to live for." You rolled your eyes when he scoffed at you. "Come on Clint." You said holding your hands up to stop him from interrupting. "You have a family. You have kids and a wife. You have responsibilities, a life, and friends. Look at me." You gestured to yourself. "Im an orphaned kid who gets themselves into trouble. That's how we met in the first place. I have no family and I don't have friends that would miss me." You ended in a shakey whisper.

The two of you started at each other for what seemed to be hours before Clint pulled you into a hug.

"You know that's not true." He said holding you out at arms length. "You're as much family to us as the dog is."

You let out a short strangled laugh and wiped away a silent tear as you stepped back. "So what? I'm the second dog to your family?" You smiled.

Clint chuckled as he put his arm around your shoulder. "You know what I mean. Now come on, Laura is making supper." He said as you both walked to the car.

In a way he was right. As you buckled into the truck you thought about it. He and his wife had been so willing to take in the 16 year old misfit two years ago, and you loved them with all your heart. However, Shield had made it clear that you were expendable. That had been engraved in your mind when you trained under Hydra, and they always say that old habits die hard. It was hard for you to believe that someone could actually care about you and not want you to get hurt.

Those thoughts were pushed to the corner of your mind as you stepped through the door of Clints house and was greeted by the excited kids. This was what you wanted to remember if you died tomorrow. Not the days of torture at Hydra. Not the days where you had to mend your own wounds in a dark ally. This was the family you wanted to remember for eternity.
'Keeping Clint safe is what they need though. I may need them, but they need him more.' You thought through a smile as the kids greeted their dad next.

"Welcome home." Their mother said from your left. "How do you feel?" She asked as she ushered you into the kitchen to eat.

"I'll be fine. Thanks." You said taking the pre made plate from her. Maybe Clint was right. Maybe a few people would miss you. Maybe.
