Jasper

Today is the first day of summer and I couldn't call Hunter fast enough. "Hey, baby. How was school?"

     "Dragging. You?"

"Okay...my friend Shawn is coming over in awhile and his girlfriend is going to tag along for a movie."

"Sounds fun...I guess I'll talk to you later?"

     "Hunter?"

     "Yeah?"

     "How's your mom?"

"Her cast is coming off today."

     "That's good!"

     "Yeah, I guess..."

     I frown. "Hunter, what's wrong?"

"You haven't called for a couple weeks..."

     "I texted you."

     "Not really..."

"Hunter, what's going on? Is something wrong?"

He sighs. "I want to see you..."

"I know...I want to see you too. I'll talk to you later?"

"I think I'm gonna go to bed early..."

     "Um...okay. Bye..."

He hangs up without another word.

I groan and rub my face.

Let's catch up:

I came home in April and had to focus on school that I barely talked to Hunter then stopped altogether. I finally wanted to bring up him coming here for the summer, but he doesn't seem to want anything to do with me. I made friends and they stick up for me if someone tries to mess with me. Now it's summer and I don't have enough money to go and see Hunter and his mom wants to see him without her injuries getting in the way. I was also offered to be adopted or I have to go back to America in six months.

Christian comes down and smiles. "I'm turning fifteen in a six days!"

     "Still counting?"

     "Yes." He sasses.

"You're the boss." I say, messing with his hair.

     "No fair!"

     "Well...get used to it."

"Hey, Jasper. How's Hunter?" Tina says as she comes in.

"We had a fight..." I mumble.

"Oh...well I hope that clears up fast. Christian, can you excuse us?"

I sigh as the kid clears out.

     "Have you made a decision?"

     "About what?"

     "The adoption."

     "No..."

"Well, if you do, we can provide you unlike your father-"

"And I won't be able to see Hunter for another five or six months."

"Jae, you need to think about your future-"

"I was in a position where I was going to be able to make it work...I was going to work hard...now I'm here where everything is being handed to me!" I rush to my room and text Shawn I can't make it. I curl up and sigh as I think about Hunter. I wish it wasn't so late there...

A knock is placed on my door as Dylan comes in. "I want to talk..."

"Why does everyone want to talk? I was just asked this!"

"Jae, you have two days to give an answer-"

"So, I'll give my answers in two days." I snap again and burrow into my bed spread. I hear the door close and I whimper.

Later that night, a storm rolls in and I panic.

I get a blanket and sit in a corner farthest from the window, hating my fear of storms. I flinch when my phone starts ringing. I run to my bed, grab it, then run back to my hiding place as I answer without checking the I.D. "H-Hello?"

"I just saw the weather broadcast-"

I cut him off with a yelp when lightening crashes. "S-S-Sorry..."

     "I'm sorry about today..."

     "I'm sorry I've b-been so dis-s-stant..." I stutter as thunder rumbles.

     He doesn't speak.

"I was offered an adoption from my cousins and lawyer."

     "Really? That's great!"

"Yeah...but that means I can't see you for longer..."

"Jazz, you can't go back to your dad..."

"But I could stay with you!"

     "Jasper, please accept the adoption."

     "Okay...fine..."

     "You know I love you..."

"And I love you too...it's just hard to be so far away all the time..."

"I know, baby...but we've made it this far, don't worry."

I sniffle as my cheeks turn pink. Dammit, I'm still not used to it... "Okay...well..."

"I'll keep talking to you until the storm passes or you fall asleep, okay?"

"Yeah...sounds good." But I think I'm glad I'm not used to it quite yet...
