Experiment gone wrong

"Hi Alphys, what have you been up to?" Frisk asked as he walked into her lab with some nice cream in his hands. "I brought you some nice cream from that guy outside. He seems to be in a very good mood since he's moved his cart here to hotland. I almost couldn't get this because of all the monsters waiting in line."

Shaking her head no, Alphys smiled as she shyly said, "I-I can't. I'm still o-on that wo-workout p-plan with Papyrus. If I g-give in to the te-temptation and eat it, I would have to w-work really hard to work it off again."

Unsure of what else to do with it, Frisk shrugged and started to eat it, not wanting it to go to waste before it melted. "Ok. So, what am I helping you with today? What are you trying to make?"

"I want to try to create this. It's from my favorite anime," she said proudly as she held out a copy of Mew Mew: Kissy Cutie, pointing at something one of the characters was holding. "I-I want to make it as a present... For Undyne. Do you think that's weird?"

Frisk smiled as he shook his head no. "That looks cool. I think she'll like it," he answered, trying to reassure his friend. Ever since he met Alphys, he knew how shy she was. She lacked confidence in herself, and it was because of that that Frisk wanted to help her. After he delivered Undyne's little love letter to her, Alphys has never been happier.

Together, they started building. Actually, Frisk only handed her the tools as Toriel forbid him from doing something reckless in the lab. She didn't want Frisk to come home with any injuries like last time. As the time past by, the strange septar device was finished.

"Does it work? What does it do?" Frisk asked, not really sure. He never actually seen the anime because he was always out playing with monster kid, or Sans and Papyrus. He noticed there was like a little lens on the top, making him think it was some sort of laser, or flash light. "Can we try it?"

"S-sure. This d-device is a h-heat ray, so if it works, it should be a-able to he-heat up noodles to a safe temperature without burning it." Alphys clicked a button that was supposed to start it and aimed at some spaghetti noodles she placed in a pot of cold water. When nothing happened, she became confused. "Huh, th-that's weird. I made it for her to help her cook without burning down her house, but i-it's not working." Examining it closely, Frisk watched as Alphys meddled with the device, unknowingly pointing it towards him. He didn't think much of it at first, thinking it was broken, until it suddenly fired.

A bright white light filled the lab as Frisk suddenly felt something behind him. A human's arm had wrapped itself around him, grabbing at his heart. When the light was gone, he slowly turned to see a frightening smiling face behind him. "Ah! Wh-who are you? Alphys, what happened?"

The strange boy looked around just as confused as Frisk was, but strangely satisfied by the turn of events. He picked up the knife he had dropped to the floor and answered, "greetings, I'm Chara. Who are you, and why are you hanging out with a monster?"

"I-I'm not sure what h-happened, but F-Frisk, maybe you should get away from him," Alphys suggested, not liking the creepy smile on the other boy's face. There was something else about Chara that wasn't sitting well with her. "Where are you from, Chara?"

Chara looked over at her once, almost as if he was amused by the situation, before smirking, "you were the one spying on me, aren't you? Man, I didn't think something as disgusting as you lived this long. I guess that's why you live alone."

"Hey, that's not nice!" Frisk shouted, trying to push off Chara's arm. "Apologize to my friend now, or I'm going to tell Undyne on you!" He hated the way Chara had spoken to Alphys and was very worried on how she would take his insults.

Chara smiled as he held onto Frisk tighter, almost as if challenging him. "She's alive, huh? Fine, go tell her, pipsqueak. Fatty here doesn't seem like she's going to be a lot of fun anyways, so I'd rather mess with her girlfriend."

"Frisk, i-it's okay. Really," she looked down at her feet as she tried to fight back some oncoming tears. "L-let's just try to figure out what happened... Oh, and please do me a favor. Don't tell Toriel about this. She made me promise not to let anything happen to you."

"That goat is still alive?!?!" Frustrated now, Chara pushed Frisk to the ground, stepping away from them a bit frustrated. In his world, the underground was silent and empty, all except for him and that skeleton. To think he has to start all over again in this world was slightly annoying, but he couldn't help but feel like it would be an interesting challenge. "Is everyone still alive? What did you do when you first went to the Underground?!"

Confused now, Frisk looked back at Alphys as she did some complicated looking work on her computer before shaking with fear. "Oh no, what did I do? Undyne is going to kill me."

"I can do it, if you want," Chara commented, holding up his knife to his face. Frisk stepped away from him now, a bit worried but also curious to know what the problem was in the device. Alphys was an excellent scientist, but even she makes mistakes sometimes. He just wants to know how this mistake brought someone like Chara to them. Where is he from?

Alphys simply looked at him as she said, "Frisk, I-I think that's you. I-it sounds crazy, but I think it's you from another time." Glancing back at the computer, she couldn't deny the resemblance the two boys had towards each other. They looked similar in almost every way, except for the fact that Chara's hair was just slightly lighter than Frisk's and his cheeks have a slight tint to them. Another thing she noticed was the dust on Chara's jumper, and couldn't help but feel afraid as she recognized it. "Y-you didn't... Kill anyone, did you, Chara?"

With his creepy smile, Chara nodded and answered, "maybe just a few. Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton, and was looking for that stupid comedian when I suddenly appeared here." He stepped towards her, watching her expression change from fear to shock before turning his back to her. "Now I'm going to have to start all over."

Horrified now, Frisk stood in front of his friend protectively. Not wanting Chara to step any closer to his friend, he shouted, "if you want to hurt Alphys, you have to get through me first! I'm not going to let you hurt any of my friends!"

"Okay, not a problem. Do you really think a pipsqueak like you can beat me?" Holding up his knife, Chara turned back to Frisk before charging at him, ready to strike that knife deep into Frisk's chest before suddenly stopping. "What? What's going on?" he asked, confused as he tried to bring the knife across the other boy. The knife wouldn't even touch him, almost as if there was an invisible wall between him which only added to Chara's frustration. "Why can't I kill you?"

Relieved now, Alphys let go of the breath she'd been holding before looking back at her friend. "Th-that's a relief. I do-don't know what I would have told Toriel if you got hurt, Frisk." She still couldn't help but feel worried about her own safety, but Frisk was just a young boy. She didn't want the kid to get hurt while he was helping her.

"What do we do? I think we need to tell mom, or maybe Undyne about him, Alphys. What if he tries to hurt someone?" Frisk asked, not taking his eyes off Chara. "Maybe Sans has an idea?"

With a sigh, she said, "o-okay. We'll tell them, but you n-need to be the one to watch him, okay? I don't think having any monsters watch him is a good idea..." Alphys sat down at her desk before leaning back, already dreading calling everyone who may be strong enough to help fix her mistake. She couldn't help but wonder if she should really be a scientist after all the mistakes she's made over the years.

"Let me get this straight. The weakling is going to watch me? What is he going to do to stop me?" Chara asked, unable to believe them. In all honestly, he'd rather have someone like Undyne watch over him. Fighting her was a great challenge as she refused to die. If she were gone, Alphys would never receive word to evacuate everyone... On second thought, if he could "befriend" Frisk, maybe he could make Frisk destroy everyone alongside him. They could be partners, just like he and flowey used to be. "You know what, go nuts. Try to keep me out of trouble."

Frisk was filled with determination to protect his friends. Chara felt determined to show the true power Frisk had hidden inside.
