Beacon

Toshinori got shakily to his feet. His brain felt foggy and his body ached.

Where is Gran Torrino? Where are the other students? Toshinori thought.

Remember in a flash of horror just where the other students were and clenched his fists. He hoped they were further away then had looked from the top of the building.

Looking up, Toshinori's hopes were dashed to pieces.

Enji was stalking forward from the other side of the ruined building. Yamada and several other students were visible from another side.

"Villain! Go for help. Find a support student and see if they have a radio or something to contact Gran Torrino with," Toshinori shouted.

"Go? I don't think so," Wraith said.

He disappeared in a blur of motion streaking straight towards Yamada and the largest group of students. An ice wall about three feet tall suddenly grew from the floor. The wraith tripped over and went down sprawling.

Kori, her breath coming in steamy gasps and ice glittering on her arms, stamped the ground again and ice grew over Wraith's legs.

"Cute," Wraith said, then his entire body blurred as he vibrated.

Kori tried to keep up, causing more and more ice to form, but in the end she fell to the ground, shaking with cold.

Wraith stood up and regarded her.

"I am going to rip your sweet little heart out. I wouldn't worry, though. By the time you feel the wound, it will be out of your body," he said.

Wraith raised a hand, but before he could, blur of blue, peach, and blond tackled him and sent him flying into a ruined wall on the other side of the building.

"Run! Now!" Toshinori yelled.

Kori gaped at him.

"But you were there and then you were?"

His superspeed meant that I couldn't hold back. I know Master wants me to hide my truth strength, but I won't let someone get hurt or die then show it, Toshinori thought.

Yamada and Emi rushed forward. They grabbed Kori between them and began to back away. Most of the other students reacted in a similar way.

Toshinori locked his eyes on Wraith, waiting to see which student he would try for first.

The villain got to his feet with a smile on his face that made Toshinori's blood run cold.

"Well. It seems there is a challenger on the field. Another super speeder perhaps?" Wraith asked.

Toshinori didn't reply. He readied himself and One for All for the next all out sprint.

"It doesn't matter. Yours will be the first head I take today," Wraith said.

He stepped forward and then blurred as a stream of fire doused the spot he had been standing in seconds before.

Toshinori looked up to see Enji, illuminated by the flames flickering on his body.

"Run! I don't think so. Heroes don't run," Enji said.

Wraith snorted then took off before Toshinori could stop him.

He ran around Enji so fast that all Toshinori could see was a dark circle.

"No!" Toshinori yelled.

He called up One for All and sprinted at the circle. He slammed into Wraith and knocked him away.

Toshinori turned to Enji and was relieved to see him lying on the floor, panting.

"V-vacuum," Enji stammered.

"That is correct. Run fast enough and even fire is no match. Super speed really is a superior quirk, wouldn't you agree?" Wraith said.

"Surrender, Villain. I am just as fast as you are, if not faster. You have no chance," Toshinori said.

"Don't I?"

Wraith blurred into motion.

Toshinori tensed and sped up his perception, but was still knocked from behind by Wraith's charging body. He turned to follow Wraith, but couldn't see him.

Another attack, this time a kick to his ribs, landed from the other side. Once again, Toshinori could only see Wraith for the barest of instants before he disappeared.

Impossible. One for All makes me faster, Toshinori thought.

But clearly something wasn't going right. Wraith continued punching, kicking, and ramming Toshinori. Toshinori staggered from all the impacts, but managed to remain standing.

"Fool. You may have the same speed as me, but in this darkness, it doesn't matter. Your eyes have adjusted by now, but the darkness still limits your visibility. With my special goggles on, I don't have such problems," Wraith said.

Toshinori's head ached and his mind felt fragmented. The words seemed to be coming from every T

If only Shota were here. He could sneak up on this villain and take his quirk with just one look, Toshinori s

"Had enough yet? Just say the word and the next attack will be the last," Wraith said.

Toshinori spat blood and grinned out at the darkness.

"Enough? You have barely done a thing to me. I have yet to even fall down," Toshinori said.

The next few seconds made Toshinori regret his choice of words as Wraith pummeled his legs until he fell to the ground.

Toshinori grunted then climbed back to his feet again.

"What is with that smile of yours? Don't you know I am merely toying with you. The second you cease to amuse me will be your last," Wraith said.

"You can't take it from. This what it means to be a hero. To choose to face evil with a smile on my face and bring light and joy to the darkness," Toshinori said.

"Lovely, platitudes. I hope they comfort you as you die," Wraith sneered.

Toshinori started to reply then something very odd happened. Somebody spoke in his mind.

"I am about to distract the Villain. Be ready."

Toshinori had a second to wonder if all those hits had jostled his brain a bit too much before there was a flash of light.

Ishi, standing on the other side of courtyard, was glowing like a beacon. Not brightly enough to blind Toshinori, but still brightly. In Ishi's light, Toshinori could see Wraith's shadow.

He turned to see the villain behind him, floundering and pulling at his goggles.

His night vision goggles! He can't see anymore! Toshinori thought. Now is my chance!

Toshinori's body blurred as he ran at the villain, pulling on One for All for all he was worth.

"Smash!" Toshinori yelled as he released a punch overflowing with power at Wraith's jaw.

The villain's head snapped up and he crumpled to the ground in a heap.
