Toshinori moved mechanically. He grabbed his backpack and started stuffing everything he needed into it. There was a small bag hidden the house's crawl space with money and keys to a safehouse that Master had set up in case something like this happened.

Master had told Toshinori what to do if this ever happened. Told him about the safeguards in place for him and that if One for All got her then it was possible that he would be next. The plan was for Toshinori to grab the emergency bag with money and keys along with anything else he absolutely needed and then leave the house and never come back. After that, he was to lie low in the anonymous safehouse and get help from Gran Torrino if need be. Under no circumstances was he to linger or do anything that showed he had ever known Nana Shimura.

Toshinori already had his backpack packed and was getting ready to leave, when he stopped. He couldn't go to Master's funeral. If All for One suspected that Master had passed on One for All, he would be watching to see who turned up for it. If he was to say his good-byes to his master, he had to do so now.

Toshinori dropped the backpack and the emergency bag at the door and rushed back to the couch.

"Master," Toshinori began then choked on the words. He took a deep breath then spoke again.

"I have to leave you now. I just wanted you to know that I am so very, very sorry. You were the one who raised me and taught me what it was to be a true hero. I only hope I can become a hero that you would be proud of," Toshinori said.

He stopped again. He had been about to say something about getting revenge on All for One, but a good hero didn't seek revenge. Master had taught him better than that. So Toshinori wouldn't be looking for revenge, but for justice. Even so, he felt that to utter All for One's name in his last words to Master would be giving the monster more than he was due.

"I promise to be a symbol of peace that everyone can believe in. And to make the sacrifice of you and all the other bearers finally worth it," Toshinori said.

He stopped and gently brushed his master's bangs out of her eyes.

"I also promise to keep on smiling Master and to remember you ever time I smile," Toshinori finished.

Then he turned around to go. He stopped before he reached the bags and hesitated.

Master had always been clear in her instructions for him not to linger if the worst happened, but there was something else Toshinori had to do.

Master had installed a camera in the livingroom that could be accessed via her phone that if All for One ever broke in and was waiting for them, she could see it and keep them safe. As Toshinori looked behind the picture that he knew hid the camera, he saw that the lens in the picture was undamaged.

Toshinori went back to his master.

"Sorry," he muttered as he reached into her right pants pocket for her phone.

Pulling it out, Toshinori typed in the password. She had never really kept it a secret from him, claiming that he might need what was on it someday.

He tapped the app on her phone that connected to the camera and waited anxiously for it to load.

When it did, he clicked on today's date and then started to watch the recorded video. He fastforwarded the early morning, but couldn't help stopping when he saw the video of himself headed out the door. He watched as Master put her hands on his shoulders and told him to keep smiling.

Then he continued to fastforward, stopping once or twice when Master jumped up from the couch, but continuing on when it became clear she was only shouting at the television and cheering him on. Watching her cheer for him made his chest ache.
