♬3.1 - Kissing Booth

If you haven't seen kissing booth on Netflix, you must! (No spoilers for the movie, so you can still read this.)

Imagine Shawn and his best friend trying to think about a charity booth for the carnival. Shane comes up with a kissing booth.

"Whoever makes the most money for their charity gets a hundred bucks for themselves," Nelly announces proudly. "In gift cards... but still."

"Yeah, I mean—cool," you shrug. "I've been doing charity stuff since I was like five. Trust me, the good deed is way more rewarding than the prize."

"Free shit," she replies. "Free shit is always the best."

There isn't a single timeline, universe, or dimension where you and Nelly will ever agree on anything. She's only around because she's dating Shawn's best friend. They've been together since middle school, and you still don't know how anyone survives that long with her.

You can last maybe five minutes with her before you need to be rescued by Shawn. Or a fire alarm. Or the apocalypse.

"So you and Shawn," she asks. "What are you going to do for your charity?"

"No clue yet. Shawn seemed excited this morning, so I'm hoping he already came up with something."

"Nice. Lucas and I are doing—"

"And you two are partners," you interrupt. "You're always partners."

"So are you and Shawn."

You shut up. She's not wrong. Unfortunately.

Right on cue, Shawn walks into the cafeteria looking way too excited for 11:47 a.m. He's smiling to himself, almost laughing, plopping down beside you like he just won the lottery.

"Ideas?" you tease.

"Kissing booth."

You blink.

Then grin. "If you're running it, we'd win in like... five minutes."

He laughs. "I mean, I could be the special guest. But we'd need other people working too. Especially if we get a few popular kids—then it'd really take off."

"It's a great idea," you admit. "But is the school even gonna allow it? They yelled at me yesterday because my sweater slipped off my shoulder. I was literally wearing a T-shirt under it. You couldn't even see skin."

"Yeah, that neon-orange T-shirt really turns me on," Shawn deadpans. "Especially the left shoulder portion."

"Shut up, I hate you," you laugh, punching him in the arm.

"Sorry, Annie. But honestly, how dare you. A bare shoulder? So scandalous. Truly disgusting."

"You can stop anytime now."

Across the table, Clara leans in like a hawk circling prey.

"If Shawn's running the booth," she says, twirling her hair, "I—and like everyone I know—would definitely take part."

Shawn awkwardly looks down and steals a fry off your tray.

The stare she's giving him?
Illegal.
It makes everyone uncomfortable.
Or maybe just you.

"Awe nice," Shawn says, chewing. "How can a fry be warm and still frozen?"

"Ask the Newton High Cooking Crew," you mutter. "Pretty sure they got their food-safety license from the back of a weed-decorated Scooby-Doo van."

Shawn chokes laughing.
Nelly glares.
Clara is still staring.
Jesus Christ.

"I'll talk to some teachers," Shawn says. "They like me. I'll let you know if they approve it."

"Alright," you smile, grabbing a fry.

"Don't eat that," Shawn warns. "I literally might die from food poisoning. And I didn't even swallow."

"That's what—"

"Lucas, shut up," Shawn cuts in. "Grow up."

"She said," Lucas finishes under his breath.

"Fuck you," Shawn mutters, grinning.

The bell rings. Shawn stands, still smiling like an idiot.

"I'm heading to work. Hopefully someone approves our booth."

"Hopefully," you say. "Otherwise we're back to square one."

He nudges your shoulder with his before leaving.
