Bloodied wings, still sore from battle

cut hide, still stinging from the fight

narrowed eyes, still wise from the attack

snarling muzzle, still wary of the danger

She hangs her head as she finds defeat

her body aches with her failure

her heart still breaking with her loss

she tucks her battle torn wings and howls to the stars

she has lost it all so fast

everything taken as she fought in vain

their final fear filled cries still etched in her mind

"how can a mother lose her children in front of her?"

she asked herself again and again as she licked her wounds
