I was the one who had it all
I was the master of my fate

Thorin Oakenshield watched her run out of the throne room in tears, reaching out as if that would stop her from leaving him. He couldn't stop her and he hated the feeling of powerlessness. She was his One, and yet he had never told her so. Now, it was too late. She had received news of her father's untimely illness and was leaving Erebor to be at his side. She would not return, for Thorin had erupted with fury at her when she told him she was leaving. He would never forget the hurt in her eyes, the tears dripping down her cheeks as she backed away from him. Thorin used to feel powerful, the King under the Mountain, controller of his destiny. Now he felt only felt empty.

I never needed anybody in my life
I learned the truth too late
I'll never shake away the pain
I close my eyes but she's still there

Thorin used to believe he would never find his One, his other half. He used to believe he didn't need any lady in his life to love and be loved by. Thorin never thought he needed her by his side, guiding his way, but now he realized he couldn't have been more wrong. He was lost without her. The king walked slowly to the staircase. He climbed it step by step, his heart aching for her so much it physically hurt.

I let her steal into my melancholy heart
It's more than I can bear

Thorin finally reached the top of the stairs. He headed down the hallway, teeth clenched so he wouldn't cry, wouldn't look weak. Emerging onto a balcony high above the rest of the world, he looked down. There she was, riding a beautiful tawny mare out of the gates of Erebor, heading past the ruins of Dale. He watched her go farther and farther away from him, her horse's every hoofbeat sending a pang of agony and loss into Thorin's heart.

Now I know she'll never leave me
Even as she runs away
She will still torment me
Calm me, hurt me
Move me, come what may
Wasting in my lonely mountain
Waiting by an open door
I'll fool myself, she'll walk right in
And be with me for evermore

The weeks passed and Thorin fell deeper and deeper into dispair. No news of her had come, and the hope that she might return dwindling each day that went by. The king tried to rebuild Erebor to it's former glory, but he couldn't seem to focus on his duties as ruler. All those close to him could tell he was depressed from her absence and tried to cheer him up, distract him from thoughts of her, but nothing worked. He could never forget her, his One, the beautiful dwarrowdam he loved too deeply for any other to understand. He missed her with an ache that no healer could cure, a pain in his heart that made it nearly fracture in two.

I rage against the trials of love
I curse the fading of the light
Though she's already flown so far beyond my reach
She's never out of sight

Four years had passed now. Thorin still longed for her to return, his lovely Cora. He had learned to hide his inner turmoil fairly well and do his duty as a ruler to his people fair and justly. He still thought of her frequently. Sometimes he would get so lost in his thoughts, hours would pass without him realizing it, as he stared into nothingness, remembering every small detail about her. Her sparkling eyes, her bright smile, her long silky hair- and then he would remember they were all the things he missed about her and almost break down.

Now I know she'll never leave me
Even as she fades from view
She will still inspire me
Be a part of everything I do

A simple thought of her, maybe just a memory of a time she expressed her love for elven music, would influence Thorin's decision making. If an advisor asked if what sort of entertainment he wanted for an upcoming celebration, a group of elvish musicians would be hired. She used to enjoy biscuits with strawberry jam, so Thorin would eat that for breakfast every day, if only to remember a happier time when she was at his side.

Wasting in my lonely mountain
Waiting by an open door
I'll fool myself, she'll walk right in
And as the long, long nights begin
I'll think of all that might have been
Waiting here for evermore
