ding dong

Dan looks up from the game he was playing on his tv in his unnecessary giant room. "Mom?" He called, he really didn't want to go to the door. The doorbell rang again and he huffs rolling off the bed and going down the marble stairs, into the big living room. She was asleep on the couch with paperwork scattered around her, her glasses slipping off her face. Dan leaves her there, knowing that she's been working hard.

He opens the door and almost shuts it instantly, the boy with the glasses was standing there with his Dad beside him, both were smiling brightly as they held out a lopsided cake.

"Hello new neighbor! We're the Lester's."

"H-hi." Dan says, he wasn't used to speaking with people, "um my mothers on the couch asleep but I'll tell her you came.." he tries to shut the door but the over excited dad put his hand out.

"Wait! We made you a chocolate cake!"

"Or tried to." The other boy speaks up suddenly, "we're not bakers."

Dan tries to look for an out but it seemed like there wasn't any so he just sighed and held his hands out to take it. "Thanks for the cake."

"No problem neighbor! Can I get your name?" He asks.
"It's Dan." He's still trying to shut the door, "thanks for coming."

"Wait I didn't tell you ours!"

"I'll get it later!" Finally the door closes and Dan sinks to the floor with the cake sitting in is lap. He heaves a great sigh, he thinks that went well.

"Who was it?" His mother stretches from the couch and looks around, "the movers are gone?"

Dan gets up, "They left hours ago, it was just the neighbors giving us a gift."

"Oh... what is it?" She asks staring at the weirdly shaped cake.

"A cake, house warming gift." He goes to the kitchen and puts it on the table.
"Oh." She yawns, "did you get your bag ready for school?"

"Yes.." Dan's ears heat up as the lie escapes his mouth.

She laughs as shakes her finger at him. "I know you're lying Dan, your ears do that weird thing when you do."
"Crap." He says and she laughs.

Dan walks back up the stairs and grabs his black bag from the corner of the room and shoves in a binder with some paper and a couple of pencils. There done. He sighs and bounces on his bed, his curtains were open and he could see straight over at the Lester's home. He acted to stupid in front of him. He wondered if he would see him in school.

George. Dan scoffs, he cared so much for his mom but she had the tendency to rush into relationships, that's how come it didn't work out with his dad. He still missed him though, Dan hadn't seen him since he was four.
He starts to think about how he had to make one friend by Saturday, it was Thursday and coming to high school in the middle of the year wasn't helping anything.

But he would do anything to make his mom happy.
