BEAM POV

_______________

I looked myself over, one last time, in the mirror before sighing. I looked good enough. I was wearing a white button-up shirt and a black tie, paired with dark blue jeans and black dress brown leather dress shoes. I hadn’t gotten this dressed up for something as simple as dinner in a long time.

“They’re here.” Mom said smiling at me from the doorway. I smiled back fondly and nodded.

“Be done in a minute.” I said. She nodded and headed downstairs. I looked back into the mirror and collected myself before nodding and heading downstairs.

I could hear laughter coming from the dining room. When I walked in Forth, his sister and parents were all sitting down already. They all looked up at me as I walked in. Before I could say anything the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it.” Beer said smiling wide and standing up. A few moments later she walked back in the living room with Bank. He was dressed up nice in an outfit I never expected him to wear. He immediately walked over and kissed my cheek.

“You look amazing.” He whispered in my ear. I looked away and felt myself blush slightly. I may not have really liked him, but I still got shy when I get told I looked good.

“Bank, you are just on time. Why doesn’t everyone take a seat and I’ll serve dinner.” Mom said gesturing to the table. “Oh Beam, why don’t you sit next to Forth. I think your dad wants to sit on the other side.” Mom said pointing to the empty seats next to Forth. I wanted to groan out, loudly, but kept it in as I took a seat next to Forth and Bank took his seat next to me.

“So Forth, your father tells me that you are one of the head hazers.” Dad said starting up a conversation. “Did you know I was once a head hazer myself.” He said proudly. Forth laughed.

“No way. You were an engineering student and a head hazer? Who did I not know about this?” Forth questioned. Dad laughed and shook his head.

“It’s not something I brag about a lot. If you want to I can give you a few pointers.” Dad suggested. Forth laughed again and nodded.

“That would be amazing, sir.” He said smiling wide.

“How interesting. My father was also a head hazer.” Bank said chipping in. Dad turned and smiled at Bank.

    “Oh really?”

“Yeah. I would have been one if I didn’t study law.” Bank said smiling wide.

“You studied law?” Dad questioned as mom entered with the food. Bank nodded.

“Yeah. I graduated a year ago. I’ve been trying to get a job at a law firm.” Bank said. Dad laughed.

“Well, maybe I can help you. I’m very convincing.” Dad said smiling devilishly. Bank laughed and nodded.

“That would be wonderful.” Bank said, side-eyeing Forth.

What the hell was going on?

For the next few hours, Bank and Forth went back and forth in a battle of who was the best. Forth telling of his time abroad in America and Japan. Bank telling of how he studied under one of the most prestigious lawyers in Thailand. Meanwhile, I downed two glasses of wine.

“So, how did you and Beam meet?” Mom asked smiling at Bank.

“He came into the bookstore I was working at.” Bank said smiling back at mom.
