The Commonwealth was hot. That was one thing Sole could never get over. Before the war, the northeastern parts of the United States could get warm, yes, but nothing like now. Now it seemed the heat and sticky radiation got into everything, causing their clothes to stick to them with sweat and nearly suffocate them. One afternoon, Sole decided they had enough and finally took off the gas mask they always wore. They splashed some water on their face from the stream they stopped at and looked up to reveal one brilliantly colored eye. But unfortunately, they also revealed the dark, twisted scar that took up most of the right side of their face, covering what could must have been an eye socket at some point and forcing their lips up in a smirk.
Cait: She gasped at first, but not from the scar. She was more shocked that Sole took off the mask more than anything. “So that’s what you look like under there!” She knelt next to them, gently guiding their face toward hers. “Whatcha been hidin’ for? You know how hard it is to do this when I can’t get to your lips?” Before Sole could respond, she kissed them, not caring in the slightest about their looks.
“But doesn’t this bother you?” Sole asked, one eyebrow raised.
“I’d be more bothered if you were dead.”
Curie: The Synth immediately began inspecting the old wound, trying to figure out if there was a way to reverse the damage. “I may ‘ave somezhing to ‘elp, my love.” She pulled out a notepad and began scribbling in it. “Or I can make somezhing.”
“It…bothers you that much?” Sole winced.
“Non, but of course not! But if it bothers you, I want you to be ‘appy. I will love you no matter what you look like.” Curie pressed a kiss to their forehead.
Danse: Being in the Brotherhood, he’d seen plenty of nasty wounds and the scars they left behind. Still, he wasn’t prepared for something like this. He noticed the way they tried to hide that side of their face and didn’t look at him. “Soldier,” he said, softly.
“I’ll put the mask back on.” Sole reached for it.
“No. Leave it off.” Danse placed his hands over theirs on the mask. “I like you better this way.”
Hancock: The mayor couldn’t help but laugh. Unfortunately, Sole took this as a bad sign and huffed, looking away from him. He nudged them playfully. “What have you been worried about?”
“I knew you’d hate it.” Sole grumbled out something else. “I should’ve known.”
“Hey. Listen, I’m a Ghoul. You don’t look worse than me.” Hancock nuzzled them, rubbing his leathery cheek against theirs. “At least you still have a nose.”
MacCready: “Whoa, who tried to kill you?” His eyes were wide as he stared at them. He’d never seen a scar like that before.
“Doesn’t matter,” Sole replied, looking away.
“I’m glad you won.” He moved to squat down in front of them. “You have a really pretty, er, eye, I guess. Nice color.”
Sole smiled slightly.
“Can you leave the mask off for a while?”
Piper: She bit back a gasp. “Blue, what… What happened?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Sole took a deep breath and began to put the mask back on when Piper stopped them.
“You know, I honestly think you look better without the mask.” She pressed a kiss to their cheek. “Besides, it’s easier to give you a kiss.”
Preston: At first, he’s surprised. But then, he feels…pity, almost. “Babe, you don’t have to hide around me.”
“You think it’s ugly.” Sole turns around.
“I could never think that.” Preston hugs them from behind, resting his head on their shoulder. “I will never think that.”
“…Promise?”
“Always.”
