Chapter 5

Soda's POV

When Pony bent down and hugged me, I saw Steve quickly walk out of the room and seconds later I heard the front door slam shut. I didn't chase after him because all I felt like doing was crying. I messed everything up between Steve and I.

'I'm such a screw up!' I thought to myself as I cried harder into Pony's shoulder

I ended up crying for another 30 minutes and fell asleep because of how emotionally exhausted I was. I felt like a baby for crying so much. I felt like a shouldn't have been crying because there are so many other people that are going through things that are much worse than what I'm going through. Don't feel that I'm allowed to cry so I don't tend to cry that much around people.

Anyways.....ended up waking an hour before I had to so I decided to make breakfast, which took awhile surprisingly. I'm not a good cook really so I made eggs and bacon. I messed up on the eggs a couple of times so I had to recook them. It took me about 45 minutes to get it perfect but once I did I was very proud.

Right around the time I finished making breakfast Darry and Ponyboy got up and ate breakfast with me. But right after breakfast Pony had to rush out of the door because he was running late for school. Darry ended up taking me to work because Steve didn't come over to take me, which I expected. We got into Darry's truck and he started driving. It was quiet for awhile until Darry finally broke the silence.

"So....um...what was going on with you and Steve last night?" He asks curiously

"He's just made at me because I would tell him why I was acting different...." I tell him

"Well why didn't you tell him?"

"Because I didn't wanna tell him"

"But he's your best friend Soda, isn't he the one person that you tell everything to?"

"Just because he's my best friend doesn't mean that I need to tell him every single little thought in my head!!" I yell a little

"Okay Sodapop, but your gonna need to tell him sometime soon to got that?" He ask calmly

"Yeah yeah ok."

I few minutes pass and we finally arrive at the DX. I quickly get out now wanting to sit in an awkward silence any longer even though I know it'll be awkward soon because Steve is coming into work today. I walk inside and head over to the checkout counter while I hope for hope for people to walk in. Well my wish came true because soon after I sat down Steve came strolling on in and didn't even turn his head to look and see if I was even there. He just walked straight to the back without saying a word.

I stayed like that for awhile but when it reached the end of my shift I decided to say goodbye to Steve. I walk around for 5 minutes until I finally found him working on a car as usual. I lightly tap him on the shoulder to get his attention.

"Hey I just wanted to let you know that I'm leavin."

"Ok......" is all he said

"Well, bye Steve."

All he did was was wave without saying a word. I walked away because I figured that's all I would get out of him and I started heading towards home.
