Steve's POV
After Soda left I felt kinda bad for not sayin much to him. Then I realized that he didn't have a car to drive home in because I didn't pick him up and Darry had to use his car at work. I quickly got up from working on the car and ran out of the DX to find Sodapop. I start running down the streets searching everywhere until I finally found him lying in an alleyway about a bock away from the DX. I run over to him and he's barely conscious.
"Soda!?"
"S-Steve?"
"What happened?!?!"
"I got jumped by a couple Socs....."
"Im sorry everything's gonna be ok, I'm gonna take you to the hospital alright?"
"N-no take me home, I don't need to-" before he could finish what he was saying he passed out cold
I picked up Soda and started darting towards the hospital. When I ran in I started yelling and begging for someone to help. Doctors and nurses came running over immediately. They quickly took him to a hospital room. I tried getting in to the room with him but they wouldn't let me in, so they had to get security to get me away. I decided to get a hold of a phone to call the Curtis's house and tell them what happened. I called them and Ponyboy picked up.
"Hello?" Pony says
"Hey Pony it's Steve, I'm at the hospital with Sodapop." I tell him
"What?!?! Why?!?!"
"Soda got jumped on his way home from work."
"Okay I'm coming over there."
"Tell Darry too."
"I will"
"Alright bye Pony."
"Bye Steve."
I hung up the phone and went to sit down in the waiting room. I stay there for about 5 minutes then Darry and Ponyboy came running in. I get up from my seat as Darry starts taking.
"Hey where's Soda?" Darry asks impatiently
"He's in hospital room 6 that's 4 doors down but they won't let me in." I tell him
"Like hell they won't let us in!" Darry says as he marches up to reception
"Hello we would like to go into room 6." Darry says firmly
"Okay well you should be able to access that room in about 5 minutes sir." The receptionist replays sweetly
"Okay thank you." Darry says back to her as he turns back around to face us
"Lets go sit down" he tells Pony and I
We go and sit down to wait till we can go into Soda's room. It felt like forever but eventually it was time to go in. I was very excited to see him but at the same time I felt guilty because I let him walk home alone to get jumped. 'It was all my fault, I should've know better!' I thought to myself as I walked inside Soda's room. Surprisingly he was awake and he smiled when he saw us walk in.
"Hey guys!" Soda said excitedly
"Hi Soda!!" Pony replies with a smile
I decide to stay back and not say anything for the time being. I sit down in a chair that is off to the side and let Pony and Darry talk to Soda. They talk for a good 30 minutes and I haven't said a word. It doesn't seem like they've notice me either which if fine I guess. All of a sudden Soda says
"Hey Steve why are ya so quiet back there?"
I look up at him a little surprised that he was talking to me and I just shrug not knowing what to say.
"Anyways we're gonna head out, we'll come see ya later ok?" Darry says
"Alright see ya!" He waves at Darry
All three of us start walking out but then as I'm getting up Soda grabs my wrist.
"Hey can you stay a little longer Stevie? I wanna actually talk to you." He asks
"Sure I guess...." I was confused on why he wanted to talk but I just let him continue
"Why were you so quiet?"
"I-I just didn't think that you'd wanna talk to me is all"
"Now why would I think that?"
"Because I'm the reason you're in the hospital."
"What? No you're not Steve, not at all don't you even think that for a second!"
"B-but I was the one who let you walk home alone and with no car! It was my fault Soda!" After I say that I start to tear up but I try to hold the tears back
"No Steve I decided to walk home alone and it's not like they killed me I'm still here aren't I?"
"Yeah ya are I guess......"
"Now come here" Soda says
I walk over to him and he gives me a big hug and I hug him back as the tears start to fall down my face. The tears just kept coming, I couldn't make them stop. I sit next to him on the hospital bed and cry into his shoulder until there was no more tears left to cry.
