I walked into the hospital, determined to consult with a doctor and run a pregnancy test to prove to my mom that I wasn't expecting. Her persistent claims had been weighing on me, and I needed concrete evidence to put her mind at ease and silence her negative thoughts.
Upon approaching the front desk, I intended to greet Bella, my friend who worked there, before heading to see Dr. Jones. However, she was nowhere to be found. Instead, I was greeted by a lady nurse who was manning the station.
"Good morning," I said with a smile, scanning the area for Bella.
"Good morning," the nurse replied. "How may I help you, please?"
"Uh, could you please tell Bella Ringo that a friend is here to see her?" I asked, still looking around for her.
"I'm sorry, but Bella doesn't work here anymore. She resigned a week ago." Her expression turned apologetic and my eyebrows drew together in surprise.
"Oh, really?" I said, taken aback by the news.
"Yes ma'am."
"Okay thanks." I replied, before turning to head towards Dr. Jones' office. I couldn't help but wonder what had led to Bella's resignation, and why she hadn't bothered to share the news with me. "Hello, Doctor." I greeted immediately I entered Dr. Jones office. And He smiled, clearly pleased to see me.
"Hello, Milani! How are you, and how's your yeast infection?" he asked, as I took a seat.
"I'm good, I'm okay," I replied, smiling and he nodded.
"Alright, may I know why you're here then?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity and I took a deep breath before launching into my concerns.
"Well, um, Doctor... I've been feeling weak, tired, and sleepy for some time now. I've also been throwing up, and I get depressed over little things that don't even matter. It's all a bit weird, yeah," I concluded, watching as Dr. Jones' expression turned thoughtful. He stayed quiet for a moment, his eyes fixed intently on me.
"Do you have cravings?" Dr. Jones asked, breaking the silence after his prolonged stare and I nodded enthusiastically.
"Yeah, I do. Literally, strawberries are not my favorite fruit, but lately, I've been eating them every single day, even late at night. They've become my new obsession," I said, smiling as I rummaged through my backpack and produced a container of strawberries. Dr. Jones smiled and nodded, his eyes sparkling with interest.
"Milani, you're pregnant," he announced, his words dropping like a bombshell. And I looked at him with wide eyes, my voice laced with incredulity.
"No, I'm not?" I scoffed. "I'm sorry, I'm not pregnant. Honestly, I've never had sex, and I don't even have a boyfriend. There's no way I'm pregnant," I said confidently, shaking my head. But Dr. Jones' expression remained calm and professional.
"But you're showing symptoms of pregnancy Milani. As a doctor, I can tell that just by looking at you right now. You're pregnant," he insisted.
I raked my fingers through my curly hair, feeling frustrated and confused. "But a doctor can also be wrong when he hasn't run a test on me yet," I protested, my voice firm with a hint of desperation. And Dr. Jones nodded understandingly. "I will like to take a virginity and a pregnancy test, just so you can confirm, please," I said, my eyes locked on his. He nodded, with a small smile playing on his lips.
