Markell's eyes are actually red. However, he wears blue contacts, causing his eyes to look purple or even indigo. He did this because he noticed growing up that if you had red eyes, you were considered a demon. Since colored contacts weren't a thing years and years ago, Markell died several times due to the townsfolk thinking he was a demon.
