Stephanie's POV

I glanced at the digital clock on Seraphina's desk. It read 6 : 40. "It's getting pretty late..." I heaved myself up onto my feet. "I should get back home."

"Will you be okay?" Seraphina asked me. She still looked concerned about my condition.

"I'll be fine." I picked up my bag from beside the bed. "Elaine's amazing. She healed all my external injuries and some of my internal ones. I'm feeling a lot better."

As I headed for the door, John placed a hand on my shoulder. "Wait, I'll go with you! I don't live in the dorms anyway."

After a pause, I nodded. "Fine. See you tomorrow, Sera!"

John and I started to walk off the school campus. "So, do you live around here?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I'll get there in maybe an thirty minutes or so."

My eyes widened. "Hey, me too!"

When I told him my address, he gasped. "You live pretty close to me!" He grinned. "It's like we are meant to be friends!"

I laughed. "Sure we are. You have some crazy ideas." I glanced at the sky. "The sun had almost set completely. "Hey, let's hurry up."

John and I chattered as we approached my apartment. "Do you have a hard time at school?" I asked him.

He shrugged. "Well, I get bad grades, I'm bullied, and people treat me like I'm trash. But I guess that's the life of a cripple..."

I stared at him indignantly. "Hey, don't be like that! Cheer up a little! There's a lot of good things in life, too."

"Yeah..." he smiled at me gratefully. "Thanks."

Suddenly, John froze. His eyes darted around the empty streets. "There's someone here," he whispered to me. "Somewhere behind us..."

I nodded. Trying to focus, I concentrated on sensing the auras around me. And... there it was! Behind us, just like John had said, a faint aura materialized. Without a second thought, I darted toward it, swinging out my leg. Sure enough, I hit something, and it went flying down the street. "Run!" I called to John.

We sprinted the distance toward my apartment. "Are you okay?" John inquired breathlessly.

I ignored the throbbing I felt in my body. "Yeah, I'm perfectly fine..."

I waved him away. "Hurry, go to your home before whatever that was comes back. Be careful."

John nodded, giving me a quick wave, before dashing away.

I sighed, unlocking the door. I was exhausted, and I wanted nothing more than to fall asleep in my bed.
