They were the grandmothers, the old ladies. Neighbors always trusted them and confided in them and they observed and heard more than anyone imagined. Having been residents for decades, they knew everyone. They lived in little cottages built after the war on Osprey, Puffin, Plover, Sandpiper, and Gull. Only Madelyn Evans lived in the big house on River Road, her late husband was a descendant of the first settler of the strip of land called The Point.

They had been friends for decades, going back to when they were the young wives and mothers. Their children were grown and only some of their grandchildren visited them at their summer playground of sun, surf and breezes off the Atlantic.

They were Madelyn, Lorraine Blake, Bea Parker, Flo Penny, Rose Howe, and Mary Lynch and they were all widows. They came to The Point every summer from their winter homes as close as Portland and as far away as Florida. They loved to reminisce about their younger years when they were the ones on the beach in the evening as the sand turned cooler drinking whiskey sours watching their children play.

Through the years, there had been other scandals, but none were as memorable as the ones that took place during that summer when Clinton was president and Mariah Carey was always on the radio ...
