Chapter 32 ~ I came to apologize

"What are you- how are you-"I glance between him and my mother, who shoots me a pleading look. I take a deep breath and bring my gaze back to him. "Why are you here dad?" Before he even had a chance to answer my mother is already attempting to shove him out the door. He grabs her hands and shoves her off of him.

"I have the right to see my kids Elizabeth," she walk past her and takes a step towards us and an uneasy feeling blooms inside my stomach. I pull Logan behind me, putting some space between him and dad, knowing what happened last time they were left alone together.

"What do you want dad?" I manage to get out without my voice cracking. I look down at my hands to see that they are noticeably shaking, his eyes follow to them and I immediately curl them up into fists, digging my fingernails into the palms of my hands in an effort to calm myself.

"I came to apologize," I hear him say faintly and my eyes widen, apologize?

"What I did was wrong, for cheating on your mother, for leaving you but I hope you forgive me for my mistakes." I lift my gaze up to his and they say the opposite. They were full of sadness but not remorse. My dad had never been the only for empathy or apologies unless it was for an underlying reason.

"You're still with aren't you. She made you come and do this didn't she? Tie up all loose ends." He doesn't respond and I take his silence as my answer. So much for turning over a new leaf.

"Wait don't leave," He lurches forward and grabs me wrist, "She wants to meet you, her and her daughter." I yank my wrist away from.

"You'd really think I would want to meet the women who broke up your marriage and this family?" I don't even wait for him to answer as I grab Logan's hand and drag him to the kitchen, giving a look at my mom to give him hell. Once we get to the kitchen I quickly turn on the faucet and pull him towards me.

"You need to leave Lo," I say lowly, making sure the two in the other room can't hear us. Lo pulls away from me, his eyes wide as he shakes his head, "Hell no, I'm not leaving you and mom alone with him. I'm staying."

"No you aren't. You and I both remember what happened last time you were here alone with dad, mom isn't much of a buffer either so you need to leave. Go upstairs and pack your stuff in an overnight bag and be back down here in five minutes." He opens his mouth to argue but I shoot him a stern look and he grudgingly walks up the stairs.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in and tiptoe to the kitchen door and open it crack to see them still talking civilly. Okay I probably have 5 minutes tops. I close the door quietly and slip the phone out from my shorts pocket and dial a number I promised myself I wouldn't dial until they called me first.

Hello?

Asher hey I need to ask you something. I hear him sigh on the other side of the phone as I click my nails on the counter nervously.

Um yeah sure Halston, look if this is was about the party-

No it's not, I just- um I need you to come pick up Logan from my house.

Logan? Why does your brother need to picked up? Are you okay?

Yes I'm fine. Can you pick him up, please?

Yeah sure I'll be there soon, are you sure you are okay.

Yep I'm fine thanks. I hang up straight away and lean against the counter. I bite my lip nervously as I wait for Logan to come down the stairs. When he does I unlock the back door and bring him around to the front where Asher is leaning against his BMW.

"Thanks for doing this Asher I really appreciate it," I send him a half-hearted smile as Lo walks by me and puts his bag in the trunk. Asher's eyes are glued to mine the whole time.

"Are you sure there isn't something else going on?" He says, shooting me a concerned look but I shake my head. "No everything is fine, I'll meet you at the house I just have to grab something. I'll tell you everything there." God I hate lying to him. He looks unconvinced but he still gets into to car and drives away.

I watch them drive away and when I'm sure there are gone I walk up to the front door and open it.

"This is your fault!" I hear him scream and I immediately feel myself stiffen. His fist is raised as my mother cowers below him, a few cuts on her arms and legs and one big one on her forehead. The vase the my mother got from him two years ago is in pieces in the entryway along with two of the mirrors.

He pulls back, ready to beat the shit out of her but I feel myself leap in between them before he can. I let out a scream as I feel his fist connect with the side of my forehead and my right eye, hard. Stars burst into my vision and I feel myself fall to the ground. My dad steps back, stunned as he looks between me and his curled up fist with wide eyes.

"You get the hell out of my house and never come back before I call the police on you!" My mom screams and he opens his mouth to argue with her but he thinks the better of it and walks out the front door.

"Oh my god I'm so sorry honey, I didn't mean for this to happen," she rushes towards me as I pinch my eyes together in pain. My right hand immediately swings up to cradle my eye. I register her words for a second, "mean for this to happen?"

"Did you invite him here?" I ask and her eyes immediately glue to the floor, "You did didn't you. Even though he hurt you, he hurt us. After all that he did to all of us and you still invited him back here?"

"Honey I'm sorry I just-" she starts but I cut her off, "You know what, I don't want to hear it. Just go drown yourself in alcohol like you always do." I let out a breath as I walk out the door, leaving her standing in the doorway.

I lower myself down onto the step of the porch and I reach up to touch my swelled shut eye. The second I get close I flinch away from my fingertips, afraid of how much it's going to hurt. I take a deep breath and lay my hand over my eye, the burning sensation intensifying as I let more skin touch it. I let myself cradle my head in my hands as the pain causes tears to drip from my eyes.

My dad is long gone, probably running back to his mistress and his new daughter. But after what happened today, I'm not sure if I can say I have a dad anymore. He was more of the person who raised me up until I was 12, then I had to raise myself.

My head jerks up as I hear an engine come closer in vicinity to where I am and I look to see a very familiar black car coming down the driveway. Once he stops I see him get out of the car and walk toward me, a worried look etched onto his face.

"Why are you holding your eye kitten?" Kitten I haven't heard that name in a while. I swallow nervously and close my eyes, bracing myself to take away my hand. When I'm ready I let my hand slowly fall away from my face and I feel the energy in the air shift. I open my only good eye at the moment to see him bend down to my level and cup my cheek.

"Are you okay?" He asks sincerely and I slowly nod, "I am now."
