Defenestration

[v] the act of throwing someone or something out a window. this has nothing to do with the chapter, it's just a fun word I learned recently.

SHE DIDN'T SEE BAKUGOU AGAIN AFTER THAT, which both saddens and relieves her. that excuse of a boy (he was more like a temperamental spirit, an unpredictable storm capable of crushing cities in one fist and set fire to another in the other at the same time, but clearly inadequate with what humans called communication) terrifies her to the core, and [y/n] is not sorry to see him go.

and yet, his words stick with her. they cling to her, whisper into her ear, and seep into her veins. yes, they are as hot and coarse as burning coals, still flickering with just as much fire as the second they leapt off of his tongue and scorched her fragile skin, but [y/n] can't deny that there is something among the rubble that gleamed.

what is her sickness?

it is true that she had never asked, never thought of asking, and never thought of thinking about asking.

and now?

the question is eating away at her from the inside out.

"what are you thinking about? you're awfully quiet today. is something up?" mimi—oh right, mimi had come over today. how could she have forgotten? [y/n]'s head snaps up to attention, a blush, ashamed that she had just been caught dozing off while her friend was sitting in the same room as her (how rude!), quickly spreading like wildfire across her cheeks. like wildfire. the image of a head of red and white popped into her head, and the girl nearly screamed.

since when had she let those heroes-to-be basically take over her life?!

"a-ah, nothing! nothing's wrong, mimi, don't worry. i'm just a bit ehhh...tired." [y/n] scratches her neck, mind desperately grasping at potential topics to steer the conversation in a safe direction. "sorry. do you need anything? drinks? snacks? i'll go and get mother and ask if we have any tubs of ice cream left in the fridge—"

the girl had just risen from her seat to walk out her bedroom door when mimi suddenly stands up, an undecipherable gleam in her corn-flower blue eyes. [y/n] blinks, and her friend is standing in between her and the exit, arms outstretched to prevent her from progressing any further. [y/n]'s hand, which had been reaching for the doorknob, wavers in the air before swinging back down to her side.

"...mimi...?"

"your mom told me, right, she uh, she told me while i was coming in to tell you that she was going out shopping at this time, so she's not downstairs right now. how about i go with you? to get a snack, i mean. it wouldn't be right to make you do everything yourself, hm?"

well. that's true, mother had developed a sudden interest in clothes, and [y/n] swears that everyday the woman was wearing a new item of clothing. the thought quickly flies out of her mind as she smiles, and starts downstairs.

"alright, that makes sense! what's your favorite flavor? hopefully we have it for you. mine is vanilla."

"it's gotta be coffee." mimi sighs, "you're so lucky you don't have schoolwork. it's such a pain in the-" her eyes dart to [y/n]'s face "-behind! thank god for coffee or else i wouldn't be able to function properly in the morning. those history papers are K-I-L-L-I-N-G me!"
