I tell him I can’t be friends.

 

I want a friend.

 

I can’t have one though.

 

I look at him from the corner of my eye.

 

He’s staring at me.



The bell rings and I walk out of the classroom.

 

He follows.

 

He asks me why I won’t be friends.

 

I don’t say anything.

 

He asks me why I won't answer him.

 

I walk faster and keep my fingers crossed.



I walk past the cafeteria, and into the empty hallway.

 

He follows.

 

He yanks my arm, my sleeve rolls up.

 

He touches my scars.

 

He stares at them.

 

I look away.

 

His hand is still on my arm.

 

He doesn't ask what happens.

 

He hugs me.

I hug him back.
