I heard a loud knock on the door. Skye has arrived. I doubled checked myself in the mirror and dried my sweaty hands on my gray shorts. I straightened my red t-shirt and took a few big breaths. Ok, I think I was ready to open the door.

As usual, she looked breathtaking. This time she had her red hair tight up on a ponytail. The green shirt she was wearing, was making her eyes pop. While I was staring at her, I noticed that she looked me up and down a couple of times. Was she checking on me? Ahaha I must be dreaming. Bloody hormones.

'Hello Skye. Please come on in.'

'Hey Sophie!' Skye strode inside my cabin and looked around. She didn't seem impressed but didn't comment.

Skye turned to face me and added: 'I got us dinner. A healthy one at that. Salad and chicken breasts. Unlike some wolves, I still care to keep my shifting abilities to the max.'

I smiled lightly at that. Then without thinking, I blurted out ' Ahah very funny Skye, luckily I have got some chips to fill my stomach during our study session. Last time I forgot to tell you that I am also vegetarian.'

Now it was Skye's turn to drop her jaws. Skye was left speechless. That was unusual for a wolf shifter to be vegetarian was an understatement.

Looking at her flabbergasted face, made me realise how rudely I had spoken to my Beta. Oh shit, I am in trouble. I dropped my head down and murmured my apologies 'Listen Skye I did not mean to sound so rude, but I really do not like meat. I am trying to avoid eating it as much as I can. It makes me feel disgusting, like a cannibal, and that does not sit right with me, that's all.'

After my explanation, Skye seemed to regain some colour and finally managed to move her mouth to speak: 'Ok, Sophie. We'd better start studying now.'

We moved to sit in the only table found in my cabin, put our notes and food on it too and started studying.
And with that, we spent another couple of hours on the books. We were almost done when my phone rang.

Leo was calling me. I excused myself to Skye but did not bother to move anywhere. I remained sitting in front of her. Wherever I went she was capable of overhearing me anyway. My cabin did not have shifter insulating walls to prevent sounds and smells to be transmitted.

'Hey Sophie! How are you? I haven't heard from you in a while, are you still busy doing that project?'

Leo sounded so enthusiastic. I wanted to answer and tell him I was with my Beta, but he quickly continued.

'I kept thinking what you said about meeting and I had an idea...' oh shit, time to intervene.

I started talking immediately after that, not allowing him to finish the sentence. I did not want Skye to suspect anything. Although she had no care in the world about what I was doing with my time, she was still capable of starting gossips or getting Rachel's family and the Alphas involved.

'Hey Leo! Here is all good, but I am in the middle of the project right now. yes, the one I was telling you about. Very busy indeed. I am afraid I have to go now, I have a guest. Catch up later, bye.'

I quickly hang up the phone and put it back in my pocket, not giving Leo the time to reply. I turned back to Skye who had a frown on her face. Shit, she had heard every single bit.

I pretended the call had never happened and put a smile on my face: 'Shall we continue, please. The project is almost done.'
I hoped and crossed all my fingers, including my big toes that no questions were asked.

Nope, bad luck. She seemed not willing to drop the subject. Probably she smelt my uneasiness.

'Sooo, Sophie, interesting conversation, you just had... Skye raised a manicured eyebrow, put both hands under her chin staring intently at me, and continued: 'who is Leo??'

Crap. I looked around the room pondering if I could just shift and run away into the forest. However, that would be foolish. She is much faster than me and her wolf would run me down in a heartbeat.
I sighed and answered: 'He is a friend.'

'Does he know you are a wolf shifter?'

Blimey, there was no messing around with her. 'Ehm, yes'.

'What else does he know? You know sharing sensitive information about the pack to strangers is dangerous. Not only for the whole pack, but for yourself as well.'

Hearing the tone of voice Skye was using made my wolf whimper. Similarly, I felt my eyes swell up. I lowered my head and replied silently 'Skye I can promise you I did not disclose any information that could pose a risk to the pack. He is a reindeer shifter himself.'

'Mhmh, ok... Then who is he? Have you got yourself a boyfriend?'

Oh, I was not expecting this turn of conversation. I blinked a few tears away and when I felt sure that my eyes were not watery anymore, I looked up. She was watching me with a curious gaze and was massaging her chin with a couple of her slim long fingers.

'So, Sophie, you have not answered yet.'

I had to blick a couple of times before I could.

'No, of course he is not my boyfriend. He is ga...'. I stopped midsentence and tried desperately to change the topic. This conversation was getting worse and worse.

I grabbed the table onto the sides for added support as I felt I could faint any minute.

Since there weren't any open LGBTQ wolves members in the Ruby pack, there was a lot of prejudice against homosexuals. I could only assume Skye was closed-minded too. Therefore, I could not risk losing my friend because of stupid homophobic tendencies.

'I mean we met playing online gaming.' My right hand left the solid feel of the wooden table to point my finger towards my bedroom.

'As you can see over in the corner, there are my ps4 and my tv just next to the bed...' I continued talking to Skye about how much I loved FarCry 5 and why. I hope to have bored her to death, although I was actually enjoying this conversation greatly since it was about one of my passions.

After putting up with an almost breathless monologue for over 20 minutes, I stopped to have some water. I reached the glass in the middle of the table and started drinking.

I hoped that the distraction worked.

I was so thirsty, that from the rush, some water slipped through my lips. Gravity sent them down towards my neck, then my breasts. I could feel their cold touch in their path. I could also see Skye watching them with my peripheral vision. What the hell, Skye was looking at my breasts!?

I started coughing. Water entered the wrong pipe. Skye narrowed her eyes, stood from her chair, and moved next to me to reach my back. With a few strong back slaps, she helped me to catch my breath again.

We did not speak for a few moments. Mostly to digest what was happening. We both agreed to get back to study and finish the project, leaving most questions unanswered.
