The Garrison was a well known location among the people of Small Heath, Birmingham. The local pub was a popular destination for the males in the area, more specifically those who had survived the war. It sat on the corner of Witton Street and Garrison Lane, which inspired its name.
The owner was Harry Fenton, a middle aged man who spent day and night in the pub to keep up with the busy customers and the rowdy behaviour that took place when it was unattended. Despite being fed up with the smashing of windows and the occasional fight inside, he stuck to the job to provide for the family he had back home.
It was a miracle to him when a red-headed Scottish woman had entered the pub one day asking about a job she had seen in the newspapers, after having just moved to the area. He had employed her there and then, thinking about how much easier it would be with an extra set of hands to pour pints.
Over the next two weeks, he discovered that Lynette Reid was the perfect worker. Her 'take-no-bullshit' attitude was perfect for the type of punters that visited the Garrison, along with her experience at being a barmaid. People quickly began to respect the Glasgwegian woman, and enjoyed her company as much as they did Harry's. She had even managed to win over the respect of Arthur and John Shelby, who Harry had been wary of her meeting after warning her about the type of men they were.
His worries about the brothers scaring her off erased as they started to greet the woman in a positive manner when they entered, he only had to worry about losing his barmaid when she finally faced up to the infamous Thomas Shelby.
