a short collection of poems about you and me (and the moon) at parties.

the first time.
the way you feel in my hands is electric
"you're on fire, babe"
i don't remember a lot except for how your skin felt pressed up against mine
and how you looked in the moonlight
with your eyes moving up and down my face
and how it felt to laugh against your neck
and how close you were before you remembered your ex was there.
how my heart sank when your eyes changed and you started crying and cursing
and i wiped your tears away and pretended they didn't make me want to pick you up and carry you home

away
from the loud air the dizzying lights and the people everywhere
and so instead i sat still on your lap and searched your face with my eyes and just held you for awhile.

and then the moment was gone and and suddenly i was home and i was on the floor and the hard wood felt good and stable and strong. and 20 minutes away you greeted the floor with your cheek too. and someone told me you cried because you missed me and i didn't know what to say to that. i shut my mouth and tried to wish away the memory of the words you whispered when you thought no one could hear.

the second time.
this time—
you invited me to another party
and you kissed me the first time
just after the sun had set.

i don't remember much except you whispering "what if i kissed you again"
about an hour later
with your arms around my neck and your giggle dripping in alcohol.
it made my heart
forget how to beat.
for a second
or two.

and then i don't remember anything after, just the moon hitting your cheekbones and you kissing me again and again and again and again.
