Pacing the living room floor, you occasionally checked the time on your phone. You knew he would be late, he always was these days, but by three hours? Now that was something else and you had to do something about it.

Just as you were about to glance at your phone again you heard the sound of the key turning in the lock and Mat stumbled into the apartment you used to call home.

"Why are you late?" you called out quietly, just hoping that you would be wrong.

"I was with the guys," he kicked his shoes off and slipped out of his jacket.

"Really?" you played with the hem of your t-shirt while your other hand rested on your large bump. "Was anyone else there?"

"Jesus christ, of course there were other people there, (y/n), it's a fucking club. What's your problem? Why are you so jealous all the fucking time?" Mat spat harshly, running a hand through his dark hair.

"I'm not jealous, Matty."

"Then why do you want to know who I'm with?"

"Because you're always late," you started to explain, "and people tell me things."

Mat stared at you, eyes cold and angry. "And you believe them. Don't you trust me?"

"I want to, Mat, I really do but these things have been happening more and more frequently. And when you cheated, you said you were drunk and that it would never happen again but I think it's happening again. I think it's happening a lot and I just don't know what to do," you burst out, voice trembling and tears running down your cheeks. You knew you were right and yet a small part of yourself was desperately praying for you to be wrong about it all.

Breathing in deeply, Mathew moved to sit down on the couch. "I-I didn't want to hurt you, (y/n), baby. It's just that hockey has been so hard and with all of this too-" he gestured to your swollen stomach. "I guess I was just stressed but I'll stop, I promise, we can make this work."

"You had me, Matty, but I just wasn't enough for you," you wiped at your tears, your heart shattering at the truth.

"No, no, no. I love you so much and I swear it will never happen again," Mat pleaded.

"You don't love me, Mat. The only reason you're even still here is because of the baby, and I understand, okay. But I don't want to raise my son in this environment and you have to accept that."

"Son," Mat said slowly, smiling slightly. "It's a boy. Oh my god we're having a boy."

"You would've known that if you hadn't missed the appointment because you weren't even home this morning," your voice cracked. "You can still be a part of his life, but I don't want to be with you anymore."

Mat looked up at you, shock written all over his face. "Baby, I'll change. I'll be better. You need me. You can't do this alone. Just please give me a chance."

"Despite what you think, I am completely capable of taking care of myself. I can do this alone and I will. You've had too many chances, Mat, and it's better if we do this now," you said coldly before turning on your heel and marching into the bedroom.

As you flung clothes into your bags, Mat came and sat on the bed, it's creak alerting you to his presence. Standing up, you moved and sat next to him, taking his large hand in yours. "It's going to be okay, Matty."

"I'm sorry I couldn't love you the way you deserve to be loved," a few tears trailed down his cheeks.

"I know you are but this is what's best for the both of us. The heart wants what it wants and I can live with that," you drew small circles on the back of his hand.

"I still want to help though," Mat looked at you. "Like come along to appointments and pay for his stuff. I want to be there for both of you."

"That sounds like a good plan to me," you smiled slightly. "I mean hockey gear isn't cheap."

"You're going to let him play hockey?"

"He might be as good as his dad, maybe even better."

"Thank you," Mat breathed out.

"What for? Letting him play hockey?"

"No, for letting me be a part of his life. After what I've done to you, I don't deserve it," he removed his hand from yours.

"You're always going to be his dad, whether we're together or not," you rested your hands on the bump. Then drying his cheeks, Mat quickly slid of the bed and kneeled in front on you.

"Can I-" he started but you already knew what he was going to ask.

"Go ahead."

Leaning forwards, Mat pressed a quick kiss to your stomach. "You've got an amazing mom," he whispered before removing his lips and standing up.

"He's got an amazing dad too," you whispered back and Mat smiled at you, tearing up again.
