Ed Sullivan had received so many complaints about Elvis's dancing, so he decided Elvis could only be shown from the waist up.
This was designed to hide his gyrations and to stop the complaints, but Elvis refused to change his popular act just for the television cameras. Instead, he danced with renewed energy and the studio audience screamed and cheered louder than ever.
Then Elvis decided to use his arms to make up for the fact his legs could not be seen. The performance was electrifying and seemed guaranteed to lead to new heights of controversy.
