Fear envelopes you. Like an attack from behind, it quickly stabs you in the back. Slowly, it creeps up your spine until it nears your heart, where it seizes you entirely.

You are suffocating. Your heart it racing, but you cannot breathe.

You hear something whisper to you. Distant. Muffled.

'run'

You hear it, but the words mean nothing. As if they were some queued command awaiting substance.

'RUN!'

It screamed with enough fervor to shake the depths of your soul, and you heeded the command.

Air swarmed into you painfully, like being forced to swallow fire. You felt it boil your insides, but you could not stop.

'Don't look back.' it warned.

You would keep running until it was safe not to.

But it would never be safe.

The burning sensation continued to erupt inside you, filling you with overwhelming torment.

Just when you thought the pain couldn't get any worse, it stopped. With a sense of calm and serenity, your pace slowed to a stop, and you took the chance to glance behind only to be confronted by total darkness.

The darkness never scared you, but was behind it did.

'I TOLD YOU NOT TO STOP!' the darkness bellowed, striking fear back into your core. The darkness lashed out towards you. You tried to turn and run once more, but it was too late. It grabbed at your legs and writhed up your body like a snake until you were completely constricted. You screamed hoping somebody, anybody, could hear you, but the world was deaf to your pleas. You writhed against the darkness, unknowing that your struggle was futile. As It reached your head, you were overcome with dread. That same slithering sensation trailing down your throat, burning into every orifice until you were incapable of feeling anything else.

Your body went limp, and, then, there was nothing.

Your eyes shoot open, your heart racing. You gasp for air, but your throat is tight. It's as if that darkness followed you out of your dream and continued to hold you prisoner. You continue to struggle with breath almost like your lungs are rejecting any sustenance. Your chest burns, and your vision begins to fade. But in some final struggle, you feel a hand embrace yours.

You stop. Your heart rate slows as breathing comes naturally once more.

You look at your hand to see it being cradled by two others, dark and littered with white freckles, as if mimicking the night sky. Your eyes trail up her arms to her shoulders covered in the same alluring pattern. Eyes continued up until they meet her face. Her eyes remained closed as usual, and she carried that familiar sad smile. Her brows lightly furrowed as she canted her head empathetically and outstretched her arms to you.

Without hesitation, you fell into those arms, that cradling embrace being the closest thing to a home that you have ever known. She pulls you into her, one hand caressing your back while the other holds your head tightly against her chest like how a mother would comfort her child, although unlike any mother you have ever known.

You start to sob. At first it was weak, but it quickly turned to soft wailing. Your chest heaved with every breath, and she merely hummed in response. She continued to hold you, to comfort you, until you could regain your composure once more. This wasn't the first time you've had this nightmare, and it never felt any easier to deal with. At least she was there to help ease the pain.

After what seemed like an eternity, you finally collected yourself. The two of you began to stand up, and as you pulled yourself out of her arms she laid a starry hand against your face, caressing your cheek. You sighed into it, allowing yourself this last comfort before proceeding with the day. Her hand eventually pulling away, leaving a tingling sensation from where her fingertips left your skin.

She hummed once more, signaling content, and turned her head outwards gesturing at the world around you.

You followed her gaze, and realized just how lost you truly were.
