Why do we write our names in the sand?

Why do we write our names in the sand?

If we wrote enough,
Would the ocean remember it?
The way the cursive flows,
Ironically like a wave.

The way the shell cuts though,
Making the calligraphy stronger.
Does the ocean remember it?

Our shell calligraphy when we were younger?

Does it remember our names; the year?
The troubles; the fears?

The memories and memorials,
And all the silent things,
perhaps better left unsaid.

Does the ocean recognise my handwriting?
The way I curve my g?

Does the ocean give me a reply?

In the shells I fear are too pretty for others to see?

Can I dissuade you, in the logical belief,
can I perhaps make you believe?
That maybe the ocean knows me,
As much as I know she?

The way she moulds the beach,
as though it were a perfect work of art.
How the sun reflects her gentle past.

Or how the ripples in her waves collect the shimmer in the stars?

Do you know how
she reflects the full moons beauty?

That it makes one
reminiscent of the past?

Does the ocean know me
as much as I know the she?

The last I gazed at the ocean,
the ocean caught my stare.

I looked away
and shuddered a sigh;
A goodbye.

I reached down,
and with a perfect shell,
Carved my name
in the carefully moulded sand.

Will the ocean remember me, as I will always remember she?

A name. A date. A goodbye.

Why do we write our names in the
sand?
