[flashback: 2015]
Maeve smiled at chris. He opened the last of his presents and laughed once he saw what it was. It was a captain america onesie in the form of baby's clothing. "Okay this is adorable!" One of chris' cousins said.
"And this is from..." chris checked the bag that came the onesie came in. "Scott! Wow, thanks man. How did you know I wanted this?"
From the back of the room, maeve quietly let out a sigh. She heard the conversation so many times that she could recite all of it. When were they planning on having children of their own? With Chris being one of the busiest people she had seen, having children running around their house just wasn't the best option at the moment. She did want to experience the joy of being a mom, but she always told herself that there would be a right time for everything.
"Is there a possibility that we'll have a new member joining us soon in our man cave?" Scott joked. He looked over at Maeve, who quickly smiled at him trying not to make him suspicious. She didn't want anyone knowing that the last conversation she had with chris before his party was him making the final decision that having children just wasn't the best idea at the moment.
"Thank you all for the gifts, scott, you're not funny." Chris pointed a finger at his brother.
Once everyone had left, maeve was in the kitchen washing a few dishes as chris cleaned up the living room. There was a silence between them until Chris spoke. "You know how many times I got asked when were we planning on having children? Too many to count!"
Maeve didn't say anything. She continued washing dishes and listening to her husband complain about the same conversations that were being brought up.
"It's all just too much. I'm happy with my life the way it is, having children isn't going to make a difference-" the sound of glass shattering cut off chris. He ran into the kitchen to see Maeve frantically picking up the pieces of broken glass. "Hey, hey, don't. You're going to cut yourself. Here." Chris got the dust pan and a broom. Maeve exhaled and got up from the floor.
Chris emptied the dust pan into the trash can and put away the broom. He watched as Maeve looked at her bloody finger. She let the blood trickle down her finger, not moving a single muscle. "I'm going to bed." She quietly said as she exited the kitchen and walked down the hall into the bedroom.
Laying on her bed, maeve faced her nightstand. She watched as the clock turned four. She lifted up her hand to see dried up blood on her finger. Chris didn't go to bed. Maeve wasn't surprised. She forgot how it felt to have him sleep by her side.
Maeve got up from the bed and rubbed her tired eyes. She put on her slippers and walked down the hallway until she reached the living room. There he was, laying on his stomach with a bunch of empty beer cans around him. His snoring filled the entire room. She grabbed the remote and turned off the tv that he had left playing in the background.
Maeve had gotten used to it. Him always sleeping on the couch surrounded by beer cans. She decided that it wasn't going to be like that anymore. That was the day she decided that she wasn't going to live like that for the rest of her life.
