Chapter 12: She Likes
Adeline

Awkward.

That word was a complete understatement as to what I was feeling right now as I walked into the classroom, feeling the eyes watching me.

I have no idea why I felt this way, but I knew it wasn't a new feeling.

"Good afternoon students. Mr. Adams isn't here today, I'm the sub." A female teacher greets, looking up from her computer. "Have fun."

Looking up from my book, I watch as Marma sits at the empty desk next to me, a bagel in her mouth.

"Hi hi." She laughs, waving her hands vigorously.

"Hey, Mara." I respond, copying her actions.

Marma prepares to respond to me before a slur cuts her off.

"Hey, Mara." Brianna mocks and I look over to her. "What bitch?"

"Nothing." Mumbling, I turn back to Marma.

"Can you help me with this? I'm trash with Physics."

"I am too. You'll probably have to ask my br-" I explain to her before her eyes light up, closing the book.

"Of course. Is he free after school?"

"What's she doing here?"

"Study party. And we need your help." I tell my brother, pushing out my lower lip.

"With?" Kaleb's eyes roll to the back of his head as he looks at Marma.

"Physics."

"Oh. That's my profession." He runs a hand through his hair, laughing.

I hear Marma start to laugh awkwardly and I look up, shaking my head at her.

"I know. Help us?"

Kaleb groans in annoyance as he sits on the floor in the living room, patting the space in front of him.

The three of us spend the next hour as we work on our physics problems.

Marma occasionally looks over at my brother and he just rolls his eyes at her.

"Do you understand?"

Snapping Marma out of her thoughts, she nod while putting her books away.

"Thank you for your help." She tells my brother, causing him to smile.

"No problem."

The two of them stare for a moment and I call to them, waving goodbye as my friend leaves.

"Since when was she so quiet?" Kaleb laughs, pushing himself off the ground.

I shrug, turning my back to him as I walk upstairs.

"Crush maybe? We'll never know."

"I know you're lying."

"Am I really?"

"Yes you are."

"No, I'm not." My brother responds back in a singsong voice and I think of my next response.

"Are you sure?" I sing again, wiggling my eyebrows.

Kaleb rolls his eyes as he walks away, closing the door behind him.

Turning my head, I look at the sun setting, but something else catches my eyes.

Easton was shirtless, his body glistening as he wipes sweat off his forehead.

My face heats up as I look away quickly, pursing out my lips.

"Why are you looking at me?"

I snap my head back around to look at him, pretending to chew something.

"I wasn't. I was just enjoying some food, you know."

Easton pulls a shirt over his head as he continues to look me in my eyes. "I know you're not eating anything."

"Well how would you know? It's my body."

He squints his eyes while walking closer to the window, gripping the frame.

"Okay." Easton shrugs.

Placing my empty plate down in front of me, I climb out the window, sitting on the frame.

"Your eye looks terrible." I giggle, placing my hands on either side of me.

Looking down, I realize that I didn't have my padding on. But it doesn't matter because he already saw.

"Kaleb punched me."

"I know." I giggle, covering my mouth. Easton smiles slightly as he tilts his head, biting his lip. "Stop looking at me."

"I can't look at you now?" He grins as he holds his head down slightly.

"No you can't."

Easton's phone starts to ring and he looks away from me, turning his body slightly.

"Sorry, I have to take this."

"I don't really care."
