Tanjiro Kamado

I told Zenitsu and Inosuke that I'm going to visit Kanao and bring her on a date to that nearby cafe that I saw just now, I'm sure they heard me but at the same time I'm not sure because they were arguing about who should sleep in the master bedroom.

Timeskip

After a few minutes walk, I arrived in front of Kanao's house. I pressed the doorbell and waited for her to unlock the door.

"Who is it?" I heard Kanao's voice behind the door.

"It's me, Tanjiro!"

The door immediately swung open. Kanao stood there with her hair loose, she was wearing baggy clothes. She also had a large clear bowl of caramel popcorn in her arms.

"Tanjiro! Aren't you supposed to be in Japan??" Kanao pulled me into a tight hug.

"Yeah but I decided to continue my studies abroad. Plus you're here!" I went in for a kiss, I expected her to give a peck in return but instead she leaned back.

"Uh..hah..I'm sick soooo uhh you shouldn't kiss me.." She laughed nervously. A lie. Why would she lie to me? I brushed the thought off.

"Oh..erm anyways, I wanted to bring you to a cafe that I saw while heading to the university's administration. You up?" Please say yes. I did not walk here just to be lied to.

"Yeah sure, lemme just get dressed, you can wait in the living room if you don't wanna stay outside."

She walked upstairs to get dressed. Meanwhile I looked around the living room. There's a strong scent of a guy's cologne in here, it could be her dad's. I checked my phone for any notifications since I had nothing to do and Kanao was taking really long.

—Ding—

Huh? Is it my phone? I scanned the screen but there were no calls or messages.

—Ding—

The sound of the notification rang again. Obviously, curiosity got the best of me and I couldn't help but investigate where the notification came from. After rummaging through the couch, which was totally rude, I found a phone with a purple phone casing. Must be Kanao's, since it's purple and also had a butterfly pop socket.

Who is this Park Jihoon guy??? He's texting in Korean, does Kanao understand Korean? I mean she has been living here for 3 years so it wouldn't be surprising if she did.

"I've changed Tanjiro!" She came down wearing a flowery dress, even her purse was also flower patterned.

"You look..wow, I can't even find the right words to describe you! You're..astonishing~" Her smile is the prettiest thing I've ever seen, it's filled with purity and warmth, every time she smiles it makes me fall deeper for her.

"Thank you..but why are you holding my phone..?" The smile faded away.

"Oh, a notification came in and I thought it was my phone so.." I sugarcoated the truth, it'd be extremely impolite, and I don't want her to see me as a presumptuous guy.

"So, what's the cafe called?" She checked her phone, she face lit up again. Eh? Who might that be, making her grin like that?? Her bestie?

"Bókko Cafe!"
"Kanao!? Helllllo?"

"Huh yes? Sorry I wasn't paying attention." She kept her phone in her purse and grabbed her coat.

"Who was that..?" I wasn't jealous. Just..insecure.

"Oh nothing, just a close friend." Her pale face reddened when she said close friend.

"Cool.." We walked to the cafe in silence, the awkwardness surrounding both of us was uncomfortable but I didn't know what to bring up.

Shortly, we arrived at the cafe, when I stepped foot into the cafe, the fragrance of grounded coffee beans filled the entire cafe. The sound of glazed ceramic coffee cups clattering against the saucer and chattering overlapped, I love it.

"Do you want me to get your order?" I asked Kanao as I pulled a chair out for her to sit.

"No thanks. I don't really like the way coffee tastes.." She looked away.

"Oh then..why don't we head to my dorm? I'm sure Inosuke and Zenitsu won't mind."

She looked at her watch and nodded.

After a few minutes

"Damn it! Zenitsu I can't catch the tarantula!" Inosuke's muffled voice came from behind the door.

"I'm sorry if they're being loud, Inosuke has been struggling to catch the tarantula without getting bitten in Animal Crossing and Zenitsu doesn't wanna help him." I rubbed the nape of my neck and chuckled nervously.

"Oh no no! It's okay I don't mind at all."

We entered the dorm and went straight to my bedroom.

"Was that Kanao?" I heard Inosuke asking.

"I think so..do you think they're gonna..?" Zenitsu's voice subsided.

"EW ZENITSU DISGUSTING!!!" Inosuke screeched and jumped onto the counter.

"Inosuke if you don't get down from the counter I'm confiscating the Nintendo switch.

"Fine." Inosuke hopped off.

I told Kanao that I needed to shower because I've not showered since yesterday evening because I was already on the plane.

When I turned on the shower tap I heard something outside clang against the floor.

"Uhm..Kanao? Are you okay??" I asked. No response.

"Kanao?" Still no response.

Shit. I quickly shut the tap and rushed out of the bathroom. She wasn't there, but her coat was. I need to find her and return this to her. I hung the coat over my shoulder and ran outside.

"Monjiro where are you going!!??!"

"To return Kanao's coat." I slipped into my sport shoes and ran to the elevator, vigorously tapping the button. Ugh why is this so slow. You know what I'll use the stairs. I rushed to the stairwell and sprinted to the ground floor.

Why did she leave? Was she in a rush to go home??

I ran to her house as quick as I could, but when I saw something that made me pause in my tracks my mind was filled with horror and trepidation. Kanao was making out with a guy with parted bangs, he had his hands on her waist and Kanao's hands in his hair.

"Kanao.." How could this be..I dropped her coat in dismay. I rejected the fact that this was happening in front of me.
"No..no..this can't be.."

"Tanjiro..we're just friends!" Kanao whipped around, pushing the guy away from her. He said something in Korean and Kanao told him to shush.

"Just friends??? He had his tongue down your throat and his hands on your waist? Friends don't do that. You're cheating on me right..?" A great tremor overtook me, my eyes were filled to the brim with salty tears.

Kanao nodded and looked down.

"For how long now??" I dabbed my teary eyes with my shirt.

"..Two years.." I can't keep the tears in anymore, with all the energy and breath I had left I sprinted back to the dorm.
